DK Metcalf praises Jeff Okudah’s good work preseason

So far this season, Jeff Okudah has been playing at a very high level for the Detroit Lions, but that doesn’t mean everyone believes in his talent.

Though Okudah has placed opposing wideouts in virtual lockdown this year, Seattle Seahawks wideout DK Metcalf says there could be a reason. He gets help from his friends.

Metcalf spoke to the media this week, including Detroit Free Press’s Dave Birkett, ahead of a Week 4 matchup in Detroit and admitted Okudah is a good player but also claimed he has the advantage of having a safety on him to have.

The reporter asks DK Metcalf about Jeff Okudah what he saw in the film of Okudah banning 3 good WRs so far. Metcalf: “There’s a fuse over him, so he really doesn’t lock people up. But he’s a good corner,” Birkett tweeted.

Obviously, given that quote, Metcalf doesn’t really believe in Okudah as a shutdown cornerback. While what he says is true, it may also be true that Okudah is playing well and doing a great job, whatever the reason for his success.

The dust will settle on the field soon enough, but Metcalf unknowingly gave Okudah and the Detroit defense a bit of bulletin board footage ahead of their on-field clash.

Metcalf dominated the Lions in the 2021 matchup

In terms of walking the walk after the talk, Metcalf did that in a big way last season.

During the team’s fight against the Lions in January, Metcalf went off the field for three touchdowns in a massive effort. He also went for 65 yards in just six receptions that day. Here’s a look at what he was able to do:

Despite that big game, the Lions’ defense saw some improvements in early 2022, while the Seahawks have a new quarterback. So far this season, Metcalf has had a meager 135 yards and one touchdown.

This week, Metcalf will likely face the challenge of Okudah shadowing him, which he didn’t have last season. Whether that matters or not remains to be seen, but there’s just no arguing how good Okudah has been so far this year.

The Metcalf challenge will be a big one for the Lions this season as he has shown how he can dominate the team.

Okudah locks down big wideouts in 2022

While his Week 3 display against Justin Jefferson may be the most impressive of the young season so far, Okudah has been great no matter who he’s up against and will have no shortage of challenges.

In Week 1 of the season, Okudah shadowed Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith. Smith couldn’t do anything offensively against the Lions. In Week 2, Okudah put Washington wideout Terry McLaurin in the defensive straightjacket. All of this indicated what he could do against Jefferson.

The elite wideout was missing most of the day for Minnesota, CBS Sports pointed out. He only had three receptions for 14 yards.

“Jeff Okudah put Justin Jefferson on LOCKDOWN today. 6 goals, 3 receptions, 14 yards.” the site tweeted.

While in college, Okudah was known as a true shutdown cornerback, and while he never got to show that much early in his career, he finally seems to be making headlines with a solid career track record and some big performances.

That’s true regardless of what Metcalf has to say about his on-field efforts to date.
