Does Luther Hargreaves die in Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy?

After a frustrating two-year wait, The Umbrella Academy has finally returned to Netflix after the stunning cliffhanger at the end of season two left fans with more than a few questions.

In the new episode, the Umbrellas face their greatest enemy yet after returning to 2019 to find they have been replaced by a new group of super-powered beings, Sparrow Academy.

Death lurks around every corner in Season 3 as twists and betrayals mean no one is safe, including Luther who faces several dangerous challenges throughout the episodes.

But does Luther die in season 3 of The Umbrella Academy or does he manage to survive?

What happens to Luther in Season 3?

Season 3 of begins with the Umbrellas taking on Sparrow Academy, who they replaced as Reginald’s adopted children after their timeline was tampered with in Season 2.

Although most Sparrows are cold and hostile towards the Umbrellas, Sloane takes an immediate liking to Luther, with the two sharing an awkward introduction during the opening battle between the two groups.

When Luther is kidnapped by the Sparrows later in the season, the two are able to open up and begin to form an unlikely romantic bond.

The confrontation between the Umbrellas and Sparrows is put on hold when a new and far more dangerous threat emerges, Ball Lightning, a massive and destructive force that threatens to engulf the universe entirely.

Knowing that their time is limited, Luther and Sloane decide to end tradition and the rivalry between Umbrella and Sparrow by agreeing to get married despite only knowing each other for a few days. In episode 8, Wedding at the end of the worldthe two get married.


Luther’s “death” in Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy

To save everyone from the incoming Ball Lightning, Reginald proposes a plan that would let them escape from the Hotel Obsidian through a portal hidden in the White Buffalo Suite.

The gang, who have grown suspicious of Reginald over the course of the season, reluctantly agree to the plan with no other options left.

But as they prepare to put his plan into action, Reginald secretly stabs Luther and punches him in the chest, causing him to bleed to death and die.

Reginald escapes guilt when Luther’s wounds lead the Umbrellas to believe it was the mysterious samurai guard lurking in the hotel who attacked Luther.


Does Luther really die?

No, Luther is not permanently killed in The Umbrella Academy as he returns alive and well at the end of Season 3.

That’s because Reginald’s plan causes the universe to reset and prevents the ball lightning from destroying everything.

In the process, a new timeline is created and each member of the Umbrella Academy is reunited in this new universe, including Luther, who miraculously returns from the afterlife.

However, the gang quickly begin to realize that all is not as it should be as they have all lost their respective powers.

Klaus can no longer summon spirits, Five can no longer teleport, and Luther is back to a normal-sized human after losing his superhuman strength.

This also causes the Umbrellas to become separated from the Sparrows, meaning Luther’s new wife Sloane is nowhere to be seen when they appear in the new timeline.
