Animal rescuers are demanding answers and police officers are investigating leads after video earlier this week caught a man leaving a German shepherd on the side of the road and slamming on the accelerator, leaving the discarded dog to chase it into traffic.
For the Dowdy Ferry Animal Commission (DFAC), established in 2015, this incident is symbolic of a long-standing problem on the Dowdy Ferry Road.
Only about 15 minutes’ drive from downtown Dallas, the “secluded piece of wilderness,” as described in a 2016 Dallas Morning News article, “has long been down. Over the years, the land surrounding this stretch of road has become the final resting place for human and animal corpses.
DFAC animal advocate and rescuer Jeremy Boss’s group has ““Hundreds of abused, tortured and eventually murdered dogs found thrown into bin bags and dumped on the side of the road on and near Dowdy Ferry Road,” reads the nonprofit’s website. “This stretch of Dowdy Ferry Road has become an illegal dumping ground for people’s rubbish and, unfortunately, for dogs and other animals, living or dead.”
In a comment to local ABC affiliate WFAA, Boss said his group’s cameras rolled as the male driver of a white Chevrolet SUV dumped the German shepherd “like trash” on Wednesday night.
“It makes me sick to see people who take the time to take their dog, drive over here and throw it out like trash, as Dowdy Ferry is known,” he reportedly said.
The video clearly showed the driver deliberately removing the dog from the rear of the vehicle and leaving it at Dowdy Ferry Road and Teagarden Road – even as witnesses yelled at him.
However, unlike many other cases on Dowdy Ferry Road, this one ended positively.
The German shepherd mix ran into oncoming traffic just behind the white SUV, but was rescued by the aforementioned witnesses.

The Dallas Police Department confirmed to Law&Crime that an “unknown suspect” abandoned the dog around 6:04 p.m. Wednesday.

“The unidentified suspect pulled into a white SUV and went to the rear of his vehicle, opened the back door and pulled a dog (possibly a German shepherd) out of the rear and placed it on the ground,” police said. “The suspect then got back into the vehicle and drove away from the scene. Animal Control responded and returned the dog in good condition.”
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
Texas Cruelty to Non-Farm Animals, Such as Dogs, Law states that abandoning the creature — i.e., “leaving an animal in the care of the person without making reasonable arrangements for the custody of another person” — is a class misdemeanor A is a crime. Abandonment abandonment can be a felony if the offender is a repeat offender, the law notes.
