Don’t worry darling, Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart is streaming

INDIE PICK 1:

Olivia Wilde may have lied about firing Shia LaBeouf don’t worry darling, but that doesn’t excuse the misogynist attacks against her online (especially since LaBeouf could use the controversy to distract from his upcoming trial for allegedly attacking FKA Twigs). If you want to shut out the cacophonous discourse on social media, watch book smart (2019), Wilde’s acclaimed comedy about two teenagers (Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever) as they pursue the myth of the perfect party. Hi.

HOLLYWOOD CHOICE 1:

Selena Gomez is reportedly in talks to produce a remake of Mike Nichols’ working girl, but it’s hard to imagine it surpassing the 1988 original, which starred Melanie Griffith as a secretary posing as a stockbroker and Harrison Ford as her ignorant (and delighted) accomplice. Their chemistry and charisma are so delicious they make mergers and acquisitions seem impossibly sexy. Hi.

HOLLYWOOD CHOICE 2:

8 miles Eminem’s boastful fantasy may be of hyper-masculine artistic dominance, but it’s hard not to be seduced by his swagger (especially during the climax, “You went to Cranbrook, it’s a private school!” Rap Battle). Still, one has to wonder if the Eminem who knelt at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show would have made the film. Brilliant directed it Curtis Hanson (LA confidential, wonder boys), who died in 2016. Netflix.

INTERNATIONAL SELECTION:

Yes, it was painful to watch Quentin Tarantino embarrass himself with taunts François Truffaut last week. But why brood over this sad affair when you can revisit a Truffaut classic? The 400 beats (1959) is a testament to the artistry, ingenuity and humanity of the French new wave icon – a film directed by an adult who clearly has never forgotten the brutality of childhood. HBO Max
