Dancing With the Stars and All My Children alumnus Susan Lucci brought the 2022 Daytime Emmy Awards audience to tears at the 2022 ceremony on Friday, June 24 as she introduced the In Memoriam segment.

Lucci lost her husband Helmut Huber, to whom she was married for over 50 years, on March 28, and as such she spoke from the heart as she launched the awards segment, which honors those who have died in the past year on daytime television.

Here’s what an emotional Lucci had to say ahead of the segment:

Lucci said grief is ‘the price we pay for love’

Lucci took the stage at the awards ceremony and first said she was “so happy to be here with you tonight celebrating people we love and lost this year”.

She then got pretty choked up as she went on to say:

I send my heartfelt condolences to the families of those we are paying tribute to tonight. [choking up] My husband, Helmut Huber, was an overwhelming force of nature. He was a confident caregiver who knew exactly how to get things started and make us all laugh at the same time. Helmut loved and was so proud of our amazing children and our grandchildren.

Helmut was the love of my life. They say that sorrow is the price we pay for love. Well, grief is an awful price, but I wouldn’t give up even a second of love.

As part of this celebration, we are taking a break to remember, pay honor and respect, and give resuscitation to members of our day family who have been lost over the past year. People in front of the camera, people behind the camera. Yes, we mourn their loss, but we are comforted to know that their work lives on and that they will always be remembered and loved. Here to honor those we’ve lost – singer, songwriter and music legend Michael Bolton.

Fellow “Dancing With the Stars” alum Bolton then performed his 1989 hit “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?” as a video montage of those who have died over the past year, including Ed Asner, Cheslie Kryst, Markie Post, and Ray Liotta Betty White. Huber was also included in the segment because he actually quit his job as a chef in 1982 to become Lucci’s manager. At this point, she’d been on All My Children for over a decade. Before the soap opera was canceled in 2011, she famously received 18 Daytime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series before eventually winning in 1999. When her show went off the air, she had been playing Erica Kane for over 40 years and earned a total of 21 Daytime Emmy nominations.

In December 2020, ABC ordered an All My Children spinoff called Pine Valley, but production is slow due to COVID, Lucci said People in February 2022. But she has said it hasn’t entirely stalled.

“There has been movement [on ‘Pine Valley’]. I wish it was quicker but yes, as far as I know everything would be in the right hands,” Lucci said, adding, “It’s really interesting and the concept is so good. [It’s] in the right hands… [with] Kelly Ripa and her husband Mark Consuelos who are both so amazing. They would be executive producers, so I really hope that actually moves forward.”

Lucci & Huber had 2 children together, 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren

Huber had four children – two from a previous relationship and two from his marriage to Lucci. They also had eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, according to Huber Obituary 2022 in People. in one 1999 Profile of the couple in People, the two met in 1965 at the Garden City Hotel, where Lucci was a summer job while college was a waitress and Huber was the chef. Huber told People it was love at first sight for him.

“When I first saw Susie, it hit me. Even today, she walks into a room and I light her up,” Huber told the magazine.

But they didn’t really start dating for three years, when Huber was finally invited to Lucci’s engagement party — engagement to another man — and he privately told Lucci’s mom that the engagement “would never last,” which Lucci didn’t did only know in hindsight.

“I didn’t hear about that until much later,” Lucci said. “And my mother agreed with him, but she didn’t tell me that.”

A few months later, Lucci and her fiancé broke up and she started dating Huber. They married a year later and were together for over 50 years until his death. When he died in March, the family asked that donations be made to the foundation in lieu of flowers American Stroke Association in honor of Huber.

Dancing With the Stars returns to Disney Plus in Fall 2022 for its 31st season.
