Dirty Dancing star and Dancing With the Stars winner Jennifer Gray has opened up about her notorious tension with the late Patrick Swayze in a new interview. In it, Gray discusses their contentious relationship during the filming of Dirty Dancing, and in a text message she apologizes for what she would like to say to him if he were still alive.

Gray feels sorry for Swayze for not appreciating who he was

In conversation with People Ahead of the release of her memoir, Out of the Corner, Gray opens up about how she actually believes her on-set tensions with Swayze created a nice “friction” for their on-screen relationship.

“Like baby and Johnny shouldn’t be together… a natural fit, right? And we weren’t a natural match. And the fact that we had to be a natural match created tension. Because usually when someone isn’t natural you both go on, but we were forced to be together. And our compulsion to be together created a kind of synergy, or like a friction,” Gray said.

She added that if there was anything she could say to him now, she would say, “I’m so sorry I couldn’t just appreciate and enjoy you instead of wishing you were more of who I wanted you to be.” .”

Swayze died in 2009 at the age of 57 after a 20-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was survived by his 34-year-old wife, Lisa Niemi, with whom Gray said in the interview that Swayze was completely and totally in love.

Gray wondered if there was something “wrong” with her for not being completely head over heels with her co-star, but she added, “[He] was married and very much in love with his wife. … I’ve been very busy with Matthew [Broderick]. What could be more different?”

Gray and Broderick met after meeting on the set of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in 1986. They split in late 1987 after being involved in a horrific car accident in Ireland that left Broderick in hospital for a month, according to the New York Postand killed the two women in the other car involved in the accident after Broderick swerved into the oncoming lane and hit them head-on, an accident Gray touched on in her interview with People.

“There were some very, very heavy things that changed my life forever and there was no one to blame. And a lot of people might think I’m here [t]ell a long-kept secret. None of that, we just had an accident,” Gray said. “It was a pure and simple accident that was tragic. And it had a very serious traumatic and lasting impact on Matthew and the other women’s families and me.”

Gray also spoke about the Dirty Dancing sequel, which she’s been working on for years

“Dirty Dancing” has been a classic film almost since its release in 1987, and Gray understands that it was like “lightning in a bottle” and something “so beautiful” that “nobody can explain it,” she told People. But she still thinks a sequel that appeals to today’s youth could very well be done.

“We’re working on this sequel, I’m working with Lionsgate on it and on the script,” Gray said. “We’ve been working on it for a couple of years. And I know in my heart that I’d like to offer fans or a young, new audience an experience that would never be repeated but has the same fundamentals. Today people think their identity is limited, the world has told them what it is. But there are certain people who can see other parts of you.”

She continued, “‘Dirty Dancing’ was a fairy tale, a hit movie, and a formula that uses dance as a metaphor to embody your energy and get out of your head and your limiting belief systems.”

Grey’s memoir, Out of the Corner, is due out in May 2022. She told People it’s about getting herself out of the metaphorical corner of the famous Dirty Dancing series – Nobody puts baby in a corner – and hers true story to tell.

“It’s a new feeling of pulling myself out of the corner — and realizing that I got myself there, through stories, through narratives that didn’t give me the best life,” Gray said. “The story I told myself about how I got here wasn’t a great story. And not quite right. I hadn’t seen how I made decisions.”

Grey’s memoir will also touch on her time on Dancing With the Stars. The actress won season 11 alongside her partner Derek Hough.

Dancing With the Stars returns for Season 31 on Disney Plus in Fall 2022.
