On the cusp of her 38th birthday, Dancing With the Stars star Cheryl Burke has posted a new video to Instagram reflecting on a past year that has been full of “up and down” for her. She is recently sober, about three and a half years sober, and in early 2022 she and husband Matthew Lawrence began divorcing after less than three years of marriage.

She has also been thinking about getting older and not having children yet, but she wants to have children someday and should she consider freezing her eggs? So it’s been an emotional roller coaster for Cheryl lately.

Cheryl wanted to think about what she’s grateful for

In her Instagram video, Cheryl, who turns 38 on May 3, said she was “celebrating [her] last few days at 37” while reflecting on her life, “Call[ing] a few things that [she is] grateful for” and mentions what she has learned so far.

“Let’s start with gratitude. I’m thankful for… wow, there’s a lot of things. First of all, I’m grateful for my transcendental meditation practice I learned this year, which has really helped me to regulate my reactions but also to connect more with myself,” said Cheryl.

She continued, “I’m definitely grateful for my dog Isabella. She was, as crazy as that sounds, she was my best friend through the ups and downs that happened in my life that year at age 37. And I’m honestly grateful to all of you for listening to me and… making my platform a safe place to just grow and evolve as a person, so thank you for that.”

Cheryl also talked about learning that failure isn’t the end of the world

Cheryl’s biggest takeaway from the past year is that “failure isn’t necessarily a bad thing.”

“Without failure there would be no success and without failure there would be no human development, right?” said the dancer. “There’s so much to live in in this life, and I feel like I’ve learned so much about myself, especially this year.”

She concluded by saying that she was grateful for her 37 years so far and for “this thing we call life.”

“It was amazing, it was horrifying, it was depressing, it was sad, it was fun, and I hope that 38 will bring me continued success, abundance, love and continued curiosity,” Cheryl said.

Cheryl’s fans are grateful for her openness and honesty

The comments on the video are full of Cheryl’s fans sending her messages of support and love and thanking her for being outspoken.

“We are so grateful to you Cheryl!! We all fail at something in our life, but we learn from it and grow!! Thank you for letting us be part of your journey!! Hugs!!” one fan wrote, to which Cheryl replied, “Thanks for the kind words.”

Another fan wrote: “We all fail and make mistakes. This is how we learn and move away from them and build a better life. you have everything for yourself Don’t sell yourself short. You are a beautiful woman. Go out and show the world. I’m back and I’m strong.”

A third fan said she’s in her 60s and still learning, especially from Cheryl, writing: “Thank you Cheryl. I’m 30 years older than you but I’m learning so much from you. I’m just sorry I didn’t have the wisdom that you have when I was 37, 27 etc. But it’s never too late. Keep up the good work for those who are young enough to learn these lessons and apply them to their own lives.”

Dancing With the Stars returns for Season 31 on Disney Plus in Fall 2022.
