Dancing With the Stars alum Olivia Jade has opened up about being bullied online and admitted she was “quite sensitive” about it in an interview The House Magazine.

Here’s what she had to say about how she’s trying to protect herself and how grateful she is on “Dancing With the Stars.”

Olivia Jade tries to ignore the haters, but it’s hard

As part of her cover and photo spread for The House magazine’s Arts & Entertainment issue, the social media influencer spoke openly about being bullied online, something she’s been experiencing since the news broke that her parents , actress Lori Loughlin and fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, were fraudulently admitted at the University of Southern California under the guise that she was going to join the school’s rowing team. They later pled guilty in a plea bargain and each served a short sentence (via CNN).

“I would be a complete liar if I said that negativity and comments don’t hurt my feelings. I’m quite a sensitive person,” Olivia told the magazine, adding, “I hope one day our society will start judging people based on personal experiences instead of this bullying effect.”

She also said she needs to remember to take social media “with a grain of salt” because as a society, we were “never meant to see the amount of people we see on social media.

“The number of people we can reach on social media is unfathomable … You have to keep in mind that we’re not built to digest information in a healthy way, so you have to take everything with a grain of salt,” Olivia said .

She also offered some advice for people out there experiencing bullying: “I encourage you to remember that 9/10 times is an extremely insecure and sad person sitting behind the screen. Bullying is the most cowardly form of human interaction ever.”

Olivia said she’s so thankful for “dancing with the stars” because it’s “healed a lot of pain” for her

Olivia was cast for season 30 of “Dancing With the Stars,” much to the dismay of some fans because they felt it was unfair to give such a high platform to someone involved in college admissions under false pretenses.

But Olivia said it was “an honor” for her to be on the show, where she placed eighth with partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy, and that it helped her heal a lot of the pain she was struggling with .

“I was very grateful that such a big show wanted to give me this opportunity… I loved ‘Dancing With The Stars’ growing up and it was truly an honor to be a part of something that changed my life into just a few Minutes has completely changed months. It gave me a confidence and pride I hadn’t felt in a very long time. I think it healed a lot of the pain I was going through at the time and I’m so glad I said yes,” the influencer said.

in one YouTube video Ahead of the premiere episode, Olivia expressed a similar sentiment before she even appeared on the show, telling her fans, “I’m so grateful and I’m really nervous and excited … I think I’m just really grateful for the opportunity and most of all.” , I don’t know, I don’t dance but I’m looking forward to learning and trying and it’s been a really crazy and busy and damn intense process so far but it’s worth every second obviously.”

Olivia also told The House that people “paint a picture” based on what they see online, so it was nice for her to go on the show and show a different side of herself. And she hopes her podcast, “Conversations with Olivia Jade” which she started right after she left Dancing With the Stars will help people “take some of the tools” Olivia is learning to use and “apply them to their own lives.”

During the season, Olivia and Val notably had to deny they were having an affair after a woman made a TikTok (which has since been deleted) claiming the two hooked up. Olivia and Val responded in a video in which they flatly denied anything was going on.

Olivia said in the video:

I’m just going to be super blunt and direct and say that Val and I are not dating. We’ve never hooked up, it’s a complete rumor. We are really very good friends and I adore his wife [fellow pro Jenna Johnson]. It’s literally just a dance show and we’re just friends and I don’t know why everything always has to be something but I’ve obviously seen a lot of negative comments already and yeah I mean I get it if that’s true it is but not, so let’s end this and let’s dance on this show and have fun and don’t make up lies, especially when you have almost 400,000 followers. That’s not cool.

Dancing With the Stars has not yet been renewed for season 31. If extended, it will return in September 2022.
