DWTS Pro blasts Will Smith after Oscars punch

Dancing With the Stars pro dancer Peta Murgatroyd complained about actor Will Smith beating comedian Chris Rock during the 2022 Academy Awards, saying Smith, who later that night won the Oscar for Best Actor would have ruined the ceremony everyone.

Peta thinks Will should have been “escorted”.

In an Instagram story, Peta had some thoughts on what happened between Will Smith and Chris Rock during the Oscars. For some background, Chris made a joke about Will’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and the fact that she shaves her head due to alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss. Chris joked that she would be directing the movie GI Jane II, a reference to the movie where Demi Moore shaved her head after she joined the Marines. Jada looked visibly upset and Will took the stage and punched Chris.

Peta thinks there was absolutely a better way to handle the situation and that it “ruined” the ceremony.

“I have to say…unless that was staged (it didn’t look like it)…there were other ways of dealing with it. My God. This is WIL!!!! It ruined the rest of the show and now the only thing people will remember about those Oscars is that argument,” Peta wrote.

She went on to say that she understands why Will did what he did and she would want her husband to stand up for her, but that’s not the way to go.

“On the other hand, I’m all for Will Smith standing up for his wife. I think the reason is VALID but it wasn’t,” Peta wrote, adding, “What Chris said was wrong. You should never joke about someone losing their hair due to an illness. Bad taste / low blow, whatever you want to call it. I can side with Will and Jada’s anger 100 percent.”

She continued: “But what Will did was attack. I think he should have been escorted. Trust me, I really want my man to stand up for me. But I’d be just as embarrassed and shocked if he did what Will did. I don’t know, it shook me every time I watched it. I was just so uncomfortable. Maybe it’s because there’s so much violence in the world right now. That’s just not what we all needed to see.”

Peta is married to former Dancing With the Stars pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy, who is currently in Poland helping the people of Ukraine, his home country.

Other pros weighed in as well

Taking to Instagram by pro Witney Carson, she and her viewer were in disbelief. She wrote and said in her stories: “We’re discussing this drama at the #Oscars tonight. I can’t imagine what just happened. We need your opinion ASAP @kylee.pickering. … what just happened? We’re still trying to collect our thoughts. What are you thinking?

Per Sharna Burgess initially called what Will was doing “bada**,” but she later deleted the slide and backtracked, realizing a “horrible choice of words.”

Her first Instagram Stories said, “The Oscars… Will Smith just walked onto this stage and… MADE HISTORY. defend your wife That was bad. If you haven’t seen it… google it.”

Sharna later apologized, writing: “My apologies to anyone I offended with this first version. Violence is a trigger for countless people.”

She then clarified her comments, saying that violence was “never” the answer, but she still thinks Will was right to defend his wife, he just should have done it differently because not only is violence not an answer, it is he won an oscar and now the only thing anyone can talk about is that he hit a comedian and he had to apologize with his acceptance speech.

“Defending your wife in an issue that has clearly hurt her is bad. HOW he defended them is not. And he knows that, I’m sure of it. And… now, his moment, which he’s probably wanted all his life, to win an Oscar, comes with an onslaught. And an acceptance speech that he certainly didn’t dream of when he thought about this moment. I would guess that the impact will be severe after that. At the end of the day … Chris Rock could press charges if he wanted to,” Sharna wrote.

But she added: “Chris Rock poked fun at a woman who worked to embrace herself and who was incredibly brave and vulnerable as she shared her story was absolute bullshit ***. A joke that claims she lost her femininity because of something she can’t control. Because of a shaved head. I know comedians say crazy shit in their specials and stand-up… but to me, that wasn’t part of the Oscars. And this is AFTER a joke about their marriages. Come on.”

After the ceremony, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences issued a brief statement on twitter, write, “The Academy does not condone violence of any kind. Tonight we are thrilled to celebrate our 94th Oscar winners, who deserved this moment of recognition from their peers and film lovers around the world.”
