DWTS Pro “Disappointed” by Elimination, Shades Judges

Dancing With the Stars pro Artem Chigvintsev threw shade at the judges after his departure from the show.

Dancing With the Stars pro Artem Chigvintsev seemed to outshine the judges after his elimination from the competition on Monday, November 7th.

During the ’90s-themed episode, Chigvintsev and his celebrity partner Heidi D’Amelio danced a contemporary piece to Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic.” They spent time in rehearsals focusing on evoking emotion while dancing, having received that advice from the judges several times over the past few weeks.

Chigvintsev felt the jury did not appreciate her efforts or her end product.

The dancer spoke to Page Six After the show, he joked that he was “afraid to speak because I might say something you don’t want to hear.”

“I’m definitely disappointed,” he told the outlet and other reporters. “I think the difficult thing is that this show becomes your life. For the past 10 weeks, this has been every second of [our] Day… I mean you just breathe and sleep and even dream about what happens on the floor right?”

Chigvintsev thought D’Amelio showed her feelings during the performance

Chigvintsev also told reporters that it was hard not to take the elimination personally.

“I think this week [was] hard because we work so hard to take the correction from the judges and really deliver it,” he has told reporters. “And when you work so hard to evoke the emotion, and then you actually do it, but you don’t get the score, that’s what’s hard.”

He and D’Amelio received a score of 35 out of 40 after receiving three 9s and an 8 from Len Goodman after he told the pair that he felt the dance didn’t fit D’Amelio’s personality.

Chigvintsev added: “The emotional part is more challenging than learning the steps – especially for a non-performer. There are a lot of people on the show who make a living… [Heidi] not, that’s not their job.”

He said that going through the moves to get over that and then “kind of getting ‘Bye, see you’ makes you feel a little like, ‘Ah, that sucks.'”

Carrie Ann Inaba commented on the situation

Carrie Ann Inaba went to Instagram after seeing Chigvintsev’s comments to clarify how she felt about D’Amelio’s dance and what she meant when she said she wanted to see more emotion from the couple. She started off by saying she doesn’t usually answer, but she wanted to make an exception.

“I was struck by how you took our comments to heart and brought her to a place where she might be vulnerable… I saw a beautiful and heart opening breakthrough in just a few moments of dancing,” she wrote on her Instagram Stories . “And those moments were touching and powerful.”

She said that she believed D’Amelio worked hard and “should be proud of the accomplishment”.

However, she also explained that she understands that women “have a higher standard than men in many ways” and she thought, “Perfection lies in allowing yourself to be unique. And to let the emotions that belong to you (and only you) come out and be expressed.”

She then addressed Chigvintsev’s comments that the judges may not have recognized the effort put into the dance.

“I just want to say that I saw the effort,” she shared. “And I’ve seen a few moments where she allowed that emotional expression that we’ve all been looking for. It wasn’t during the whole dance, but there was so much progression.”

She congratulated the couple on “a great season.”

Dancing With the Stars airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8pm ET/5pm PT on Disney+.
