Dancing With the Stars pro Jenna Johnson Chmerkovskiy has nearly 800,000 followers on Instagram, and she’s learned to embrace the influencer lifestyle. However, it is not always easy for her.

Chmerkovskiy is a 27-year-old professional dancer, and she recalled being forced to create an Instagram account for “Dancing With the Stars” years ago Interview with Observer.

“All I remember is this fun, silly little app called Instagram,” she told the outlet. “They got us into getting accounts for the show so we could post about votes. And I thought, this is so silly. Why do we have to do this?”

Blowing up TikTok was “tough” for Chmerkovskiy.

As a professional dancer, Chmerkovskiy had a rough time when people became famous for dancing on TikTok.

“It was really tough, tough for me when TikTok exploded and these quote-unquoted dancers became famous or were considered the best dancers out there.” she told the Observer. “It was really hard on my ego because they didn’t necessarily put time into tech, they went to classes and they gave up all the time.”

Since then, Chmerkovskiy has embraced TikTok trends. Her season 29 partner, JoJo Siwa, is a huge star on the platform, and that helped Johnson learn more about it.

“It definitely takes me out of my comfort zone,” she told the outlet. “JoJo would really be like, ‘Oh, that’s a viral dance. We have to do it.’ And I’d be like, ‘Oh my god, I’m going to look like an idiot doing this, but let’s do it.'”

For Johnson, the most important thing about her social media presence is staying true to her career.

“Even on social media, I stay true to being a dancer with my content, whether it’s fitness or health or whatever, it’s all to do with my work and what I do as a dancer.” she told the Observer. “But it’s quite amazing that during my off-season I know that I can really focus on my social media platform and try as hard as I can to create a good income stream for myself during my Dancing With The Stars off-season. “

Johnson gets back into contemporary dance

In February 2020, Johnson posted a soulful routine starring Hayley Erbert and Makenzie Dustman on her Instagram page, alongside a lengthy caption. The routine was choreographed by the three women, who all shared it on their Instagram feeds.

The three women were all on Season 10 of the Fox show So You Think You Can Dance, which aired in 2005.

“This year my goal is to be my most creative self and stop making excuses that keep me trapped in my comfort zone.” Johnson wrote in her post. “Part of it involves repeating moves that I can’t do that often. I’ve been called a “ballroom dancer” for many years, which I’m so proud of!! But it made me convince myself that I’m ONLY a ballroom dancer, even though I’ve trained and loved other dance styles just as much for so long.”

She added: “Being able to move and create with these two beauties from my past SYTYCD Season 10 made me feel like a giddy kid. I couldn’t stop smiling throughout the process and my soul felt nourished.”

Dancing With the Stars has not yet been renewed for season 31. If renewed, the show will return sometime in mid-September 2022.
