one “Dance with the Stars” The couple has a tough road ahead as they struggle with injuries back in Season 31. Read on to find out what happened to the professional dancer Cheryl Burke and “Good Morning America” Meteorologist Sam Champion in her quest to enter the dance competition series.
Burke said she twisted her ankle and Sam’s hip bothered him
In her podcast “Burke in the Game” on the day of the season 31 premiereLast Monday, September 19, Burke revealed that she and Champion are doing their best, but both are struggling with some issues.
“I might have sprained my ankle a bit, but that’s better than falling on my head that one time with AJ. I love you AJ!” the dancer quipped, referring to her season 29 partner, AJ McLean.
She went on to praise Champion for how hard he works, but said he may have pushed himself too hard.
“Sam has also been working so hard and too hard I think and really taking a toll on his body that he’s hurt a little bit. His right hip is bothering him and I told him it’s not an ad, he should get a thera gun because it saved my life. That’s why I did 26 seasons because of that damn thera weapon. It is amazing. It relieves a lot of scar tissue.”
Burke also said the champion needs to get out of his head
She continued by adding that she asks a lot of champion – all pros ask a lot of their partners this early. But all participants have to trust the process and get out of their own heads.
At the end of the day, there’s only so much you can do. …when it comes to something like ballroom dancing, something he’s never done before, it’s important to build confidence and I ask that, probably very soon in the game if it’s not natural. But, like I said, we have a head start because we’re friends, so it’s not like we’ve never interacted before. It’s not like we’ve never spent time together, but this is different.
Once you’re intoxicated, which I mean, once you’re like, “Oh my god, what’s my step,” that ego gets in the way, I like to call it. Or “the thinking mind,” it will take you so far and so fast you won’t know what slapped you in the face. And once Sam just trusts me and lets me help him help him, he can get through the routine, I know he can. But that takes time. This is inner work, it goes deeper than ballroom dancing. You have to trust the process.
She concluded by urging her fans to keep voting for her, saying: “[Sam is] he’s so worried about screwing it up, he’s so worried about what the next step is. Sometimes you just have to let go, surrender. Surrender to this process. I know we’re going to make it, we just have to get there, and that’s where you come in.”
Dancing With the Stars airs Monday nights at 8 p.m. Eastern/5 p.m. Pacific Time on Disney Plus.
