In an interview about his work in coordinating humanitarian aid to the people of Ukraine amid the Russian invasion of the country, professional dancer Val Chmerkovskiy was asked by Dancing With the Stars if he plans to appear on the show’s 31st season to return when she moves to Disney Plus.

Here’s what Val said “extra” Correspondent Rachel Lindsay when asked about his possible return:

Val makes it sound like he’s not retiring yet

Val Chmerkovskiy on possible return to DWTSDancing with the Stars fans are still wondering if pro Val Chmerkovskiy will return next season when the show heads to Disney+. Rachel Lindsay from Extra caught up with the dancer and his brother Maksim and asked if he was coming back. She also got a glimpse of the brothers’ new dance studio and their efforts to…2022-06-24T22:42:33Z

When asked “Will you guys be a part of this?” it sounds like he’s waiting for word on whether the show will call for him to return, implying he hasn’t decided to retire just yet.

“We don’t know the details [the show] still. I don’t know if I’ll be back or not, but I’m looking forward to the show,” Val said.

The reason why fans have wondered about his possible retirement is because he has mentioned it several times along the way End of season 30 in the fall of 2021. After being eliminated alongside his partner, social media influencer Olivia Jade, Val took to Olivia’s podcast “Conversations with Olivia Jade” and spoke openly about feeling like it might be time to hang up his ballroom dancing shoes.

Val told Olivia that he “will definitely keep dancing,” but he’s not sure if he’ll continue dancing on Dancing With the Stars.

“‘Dancing With the Stars’ is yet to come,” Val said, adding that his Season 30 journey with Olivia was so special that he’s not sure he can top it. For Val, Olviia was such a surprise and she so “outdid herself [his] Expectations” that it would be a good season to continue.

Val said to Olivia:

I tell you this, you are definitely the biggest surprise for me. They definitely exceeded my expectations from everyone [I’ve partnered with]. There are people who came and turned out to be such a wonderful season, a successful season but — I’m not saying they were wrestlers, but they had the potential to come in. As if it was mine to ruin. Zendaya was mine to ruin, Normani was mine to ruin, they were amazing and I only made some good choices for them and then just avoided them.

But with you it’s not that easy and this season is very competitive so it just means more. The harder the journey, the more it means to you and this one means a lot to me, so how many of these meaningful journeys can I go through emotionally?

Fans might be wondering if Val’s wife, Dancing With the Stars pro Jenna Johnson, will hang up her dancing shoes too, and the answer to that is no. She said in fall 2021 that even with Val retiring, she’s not going anywhere yet.

“I have no intention of not being on this show. I hope I have many more seasons because being able to be creative every week, dance, meet new people is really a dream come true. So I’m hoping that as long as my body allows me to continue dancing on the show,” Jenna said said CinemaBlend in an interview.

But where Val would continue dancing if he retired from the show, he and his brother, former “Dancing With the Stars” pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy, have one Dance studio company called Dance With Mewhich has a dozen locations across the country.

“We have 14 Dance With Me locations. It’s a company that was a family business and has grown into a larger community,” Val told Extra.

Val first joined Dancing With the Stars as a pro partner in season 13 and has appeared in every season but 26 since. He was also a judge on the spin-off Dancing With the Stars: Juniors.

Val & Maks are also busy with their Ukraine charity

When war broke out in their native Ukraine, Maks and Val founded Alexsandr together with their father to send help to the people of Ukraine. During their segment on “Extra,” Val showed off their headquarters in New Jersey, and Maks said that while they’re obviously pleased with the effort, it’s “unfortunate” they had to organize help at all.

“It’s an unfortunate success I guess that we never planned. This war broke out. I feel like it was given to us. We just do our best and make our contribution,” said Maks.

If you would like to contribute to the Chmerkovskiys’ efforts, you can make a donation on Baranova27’s GoFundMe page. The organization is named after the Chmerkovskiys’ address when they lived in Ukraine before moving to the United States when Maks was 14 and Val was 8.
