Eagles reveal ‘different situation’ restricting high-priced QB

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni made puzzling decisions regarding his preseason quarterback rotation.

The Philadelphia Eagles presented Carson Strong with one of the biggest contracts ever for an undrafted free agent. The rookie quarterback from Nevada received a $20,000 signing bonus plus $300,000 in guaranteed money.

Strong, unique Heisman Trophy Candidate should fight for the third row job. Then the Eagles decided to use him for most of the preseason. He saw just seven snaps in Saturday night’s finals, bringing his summer total to a whopping 15 snaps over two games. Strong finished 1 of 4 for 6 yards, which is $80,000 per pass attempt.

Why? What happened? Head coach Nick Sirianni offered a very dovish response after the loss to the Miami Dolphins. He blamed a “different situation,” adding that he wanted to get Reid Sinnett and Gardner Minshew extra work.

“Well, you know that everyone is in a different situation and in different scenarios.” Sirianni told reporters. “We wanted Reid to get a job. We wanted Gardner to get a job. And that was a little bit more than anything that we wanted to make sure these two guys got the work, that these two guys got the reps that they need.”

Davion Taylor’s stocks plummet, snaps rise

Third-year linebacker DavidTaylor was still on the field late into the third quarter. Strange as guys with guaranteed roster spots usually run out of pads by then. And Taylor didn’t look good. The third round of 2020 seems clear on the bubble Heading into the final cuts, though Sirianni cautioned against reading too much into snap counts from Saturday’s game.

“Some of that boiled down to the numbers we had, to be honest, everyone was discussed individually,” Sirianni said. “Out of [Darius] Kill Jalen [Hurts] to everyone on the list. So everything was discussed. Some of the twos, you know, we didn’t play our ones, we didn’t play some of our twos that were in during practice with our ones because again we felt like we got some good work done with them this week.

Taylor saw 45 snaps against Miami (40 on defense, 5 on special teams). He ended his preseason with eight tackles for a total of 112 snaps. The problem is that his snaps have been incorporated deeper into the exhibition schedule. Taylor, who started six games in 2021 before a knee injury ended his season, should be trending. These numbers suggest otherwise.

Don’t tell Sirianni preseason games don’t matter

The Eagles suffered a 38-point loss to the Dolphins in their last preseason game. It’s embarrassing, even if those glorious August scrambles don’t count for much. Sirianni wasn’t happy and let his players know.

“No matter what, you lose something so bad, like that’s hard, that’s hard to take,” Sirianni said. “Hats off to Miami. They have done a good job and are well trained. You never want to come out and lay an egg like us. My message was… we need to look at it, and we all need to look at ourselves in the mirror and get better from it. And I’ll always put it down to us coaches first.”
