The Philadelphia Eagles are heading to training camp with a complete 90-man roster. The team signed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive player Kobe Smith, each NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero. He may just be a camper, but Smith is a Super Bowl champion.
Smith has earned a ring in 2020 while sharing a dressing room with Tom Brady. The 6-foot-2, 300-pound player was relegated to the practice team and did not see any regular season during his two seasons at Tampa Bay before the team abandoned him in 2022. He was originally signed by the Tennessee Titans as an unbuilt free agent in 2020.
He will now be looking to compete for representation in a crowded Philadelphia location. The Eagles had eight players on the defensive: Fletcher Cox, Jordan Davis, Noah Elliss, Javon Hargrave, Marlon Tuipulotu, Milton Williams, Marvin Wilson and Renell Wren.
Smith left the University of South Carolina in 2020. He appeared in 48 games (17 starts) for the Gamecocks while scoring 84 tackles (seven losses) and two volleys, plus seven hurdles in quarterback position. The school website calls him the “glue” of the defence. And, that’s right, Smith is named after Lakers legend Kobe Bryant.
“Yes, I was named after him,” Smith told the NFL Draft Blitz in 2020. “I was the smallest at birth, but it turned out to be the oldest. I am the middle child. I have a brother and a sister.”

Scout Report: ‘Not Valuable as a Passer’
NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein has called Smith a “preferred liberal agent” coming out of college, but his scouting reporting is very one-sided. Smith was seen as a defensive disruptor as he tried to escape the shadow of the San Francisco 49ers who blocked Javon Kinlaw, his former South Carolina teammate. Zierlein wrote:
He wasn’t quite as athletic as his old teammate Javon Kinlaw, but Smith played with strength and guts to keep himself at the point of attack. His ability to sit down and anchor in doubles teams and exert power against singles is one of his most endearing qualities.
He lacks body control and agility and doesn’t offer as much range as a player when forced to play on the move. He’s not as valuable as a fast runner, which can put a hard limit on his overall worth, but his runaway defense gives him a chance to earn a spot in the race. future squad.
Smith told NFL Draft Blitz that his biggest strengths are leverage and cushioning.
“Buffer level. I play with a lot of leverage. I strike well,” Smith told Alex Khvatov. “I am quite strong and have strong hands. I’m very consistent with my playstyle. I put in a lot of effort.”
Eagles decide not to sign RB JaQuan Hardy
An additional roster spot opened up when the Eagles launched full-back Craig James on July 18. There have been speculations they will add another re-runner, namely JaQuan Hardy. The former Dallas Cowboy was expected to sign Philly, but they decided not to add him at the last minute.
