Teen Mom star Maci Bookout said early episodes of her MTV reality show could serve as a form of sex education for her 13-year-old son, Bentley.
“Obviously, I was a teenage mom. And the older I got, the more I realized I was a kid who had a kid and a kid who raised a kid,” she said page six. “I think with Bentley being so close to 16, it really just brings a whole different perspective from ‘yeah, you were a baby who had a baby,'” she reflects.
Bookout welcomed her eldest child with her ex-fiancé Ryan Edwards. The couple struggled to make their relationship work as Edwards displayed a lack of enthusiasm for fatherhood and battled drug addiction. Bookout’s engagement to Edwards ended when she realized it wasn’t him “life partner” she searched.
Bookout said “Teen Mom” is authentic
During the first season of “Teen Mom: The Next Chapter,” Bookout Bentley let his half-siblings — Jayde Carter, 7, and son Maverick, 6, whose father is Bookout’s husband Taylor McKinney — babysit, which didn’t go well.
Bookout has been watching her children through a baby monitor, and she said she’s “terrified” of watching Bentley interact with his siblings — especially when they weren’t listening.
“He’s a great boy … Bentley is a grown man and very wise beyond his years, and yet I’m like, ‘No way [he can be a parent now],'” Bookout told Page Six.
According to the bookout, there has never been another show quite like “Teen Mom” on television.
“I think it’s a great, real, raw, human example of, ‘Hey, this is life and that’s why every decision you make matters,'” she told Page Six. “The authenticity of our show in the early days is somehow unmatched.”
Bookout spoke to Bentley on camera about Sex Ed
Bookout has been open about teaching her son sex education. The mother-son duo had a “birds and the bees” talk during a 2021 episode of “Teen Mom.”
Bookout wanted to chat with her son because he said that when his voice cracked during Bible class, everyone laughed at him.
“Girls aren’t going to be so weird anymore,” Bookout told Bentley. “You’re going to say, ‘Oh, that’s cute.’ Or guys, whatever you want. It’s ok if you don’t like boys, I’m just saying if you do I always add that because you can tell us anything. It will be okay.”
Then she went into details.
“The sperm meets the egg and that creates an embryo. And it doesn’t always work, but that’s why you have to protect yourself. I was 16 when I got pregnant with you,” she reminds her son.
Bookout was one of the first cast members to appear on the show when 16 & Pregnant debuted on MTV in 2009. She gave birth to Bentley in the series’ pilot.
Teen Mom: The Next Chapter airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on MTV.
