Arsenal remain keen on signing Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo – but boss Massimiliano Allegri would like to send him to Roma in exchange for Nicolo Zaniolo.
Edu spent much of January signing a new midfielder to strengthen Mikel Arteta’s squad but it just didn’t happen.
More options are needed to challenge Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka and that pursuit will certainly continue this summer.
The top target in January was Edu’s Brazilian compatriot Arthur, who has found it a bit difficult to break into the first team with Juventus.
The Athletic claimed Edu has agreed an 18-month loan deal with Juve, temporarily bringing Arthur to Arsenal with a permanent £33.5million option.
That would have been a big discount on those Juventus paid £66m to sign Arthur from Barcelona in 2020.
However, that report claimed Arsenal had vetoed the deal, apparently unhappy with the terms Edu had negotiated.
That kept Arthur at Juventus but he’s still struggling under Allegri for minutes.
Antonio Cassano has slammed Allegri for not using Arthur more prominently, calling the Brazilian ace “sensational”.
New claims from Calciomercato suggest Arsenal will indeed make a new bid to sign Arthur this summer, with Edu unwilling to back down.
The problem is that Allegri seems to have other ideas.
Calciomercato claim that Juventus wants Roma star Nicolo Zaniolo. Roma are keen on taking Weston McKennie in exchange but Allegri wants to offer Arthur.
That means Jose Mourinho could end up signing Arthur after all. Mourinho was planning to sign Arthur for Tottenham in 2020 before missing out on Juventus.
Arsenal’s hunt for Arthur sounds complicated given this Roma swap proposal, but Edu is hoping his groundwork for a deal in January can help win the race.
