When it came to casting the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll himself, director Baz Luhrmann knew the actor he had chosen had some big shoes to fill. According to an interview with IndieWire, the director promised himself that if he couldn’t find the right person to play Elvis, he wouldn’t do the film. Actors Miles Teller and Harry Styles were both early contenders for the role. “It’s a privilege for me to have them step up and come in and work with me because I’ve learned about the script working with them,” Luhrmann told IndieWire. However, after going through workshops with the pair, Luhrmann decided they weren’t quite the right match.

It wasn’t until he got a taped audition from a young former Disney star that Luhrmann realized he’d found his Elvis in an unlikely candidate. “I have this tape of this young man playing ‘Unchained Melody’ and crying,” Luhrmann said. “It was just weird. I mean it was so moving. I was like, ‘This isn’t really acting.'” The actor behind the audition turned out to be Austin Butler, who filmed the tape while thinking about his mother, who died when he was the same age as Elvis his own mother died. “He had this kind of naivety about him,” Luhrmann continued. “He was kind of Elvis. He basically lived as Elvis for almost three years.”

Austin Butler has come a long way from his Disney days. The actor has already sparked Oscar buzz for his performance as none other than the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll himself in Luhrmann’s 2022 biopic. In an interview with Extra, Elvis Presley’s ex-wife Priscilla Presley couldn’t help but praise Butler, revealing that he “brought Elvis on his toes.”

“It’s incredible what that boy did, Austin Butler. He spent two years studying Elvis so it was like a shock to see that. Even some of the songs,” she shared, before recalling that Jerry Schilling, Elvis’s former talent manager, couldn’t tell the rock star and butler apart either. “I said, ‘Is that Elvis or is that Austin?’ and he says, ‘No, that’s Elvis.’ And then I say, ‘Are you sure?’ and about a minute later he says, ‘This is Austin.’ That’s how great he is.”

Speaking of Priscilla, her role in the 2022 film will be played by Australian actress Olivia DeJonge. Priscilla, who first met Elvis when she was just 14, married the legend in 1967. The couple had a daughter, Lisa Marie, the following year. In 1972, after a series of mutual affairs between the two, Priscilla asked for a divorce. Their divorce, finalized on October 9, 1973, was amicable.

“It’s always a bit scary playing someone who was a real person because you don’t want to imitate them,” DeJonge said in an interview with Elle Australia. “Baz was always so helpful with that, he said, ‘It’s an interpretation’ — so it was about keeping a little bit of truth and vulnerability, and as long as you do some of the hard work beforehand, be it the accent or the mannerisms you just have to throw that fear away.”
