Emergency declaration issued in Warwick as police respond to reports of armed people

Residents have been told to stay inside and lock their doors as a gunman is at large in a Queensland town.

Police issued an emergency statement at 10pm Monday as the situation unfolded in Warwick, southwest of Brisbane.

Residents on Wood Street, Gore Street, Grafton Street and Dragon Street have been urged to stay indoors.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman urged locals not to visit the area as police searched for the gunman.

“Police are currently conducting emergency operations in the area and are urging members of the public and aircraft not to visit the specified location,” she said.

It is the second time in as many days that a gunman has died following a standoff in Kirwan, near Townsville on Monday.

The area went into lockdown at 9pm on Sunday, with the standoff lasting 10 hours and continuing into Monday morning.

A 50-year-old man barricaded himself inside his home with a shotgun and rifle and fired at police cars before blowing out the tires of one of the vehicles.

Police negotiators desperately tried to defuse the situation before the gunman died and the standoff ended.
