Emmanuel Macron expected an easy path to re-election as French President, and he fought that way. But voters have a way of disrupting complacency, and they sent him a stark warning in Sunday’s first round of voting.
Mr Macron came first, but with around 29% of the vote, too close to be comfortable in the crowded field. In two weeks he meets Marine Le Pen, the right tribune with about 24 percent, and beats Jean-Luc Mélenchon (a French Bernie Sanders) for second place and a spot in the April 24 runoff. Mr Macron’s supporters note that he improved on his first-round result of 24% in 2017, but then he was the underdog.
