Emmerdale’s Ash Palmisciano opens up about searing grief at the loss of his mother

Breakthrough Emmerdale star Ash Palmisciano has reflected on the tough struggle he faced in coping with the death of his mother earlier this year.

Ash, 32 – the soap’s first transgender actor – lost his mother Michelle in May aged 60 after a long battle with rheumatoid arthritis.

Speaking to The Mirror, the star said he feels lucky to have had parents who showered love on him and his younger sister and insists he was unprepared for the avalanche of grief that followed their deaths.

He said: “Mum has been a true inspiration to all of us. Not only was she an amazing mom to my sister Sophie and I, she was such an amazing wife and nanna.

“Grief is such an uncontrollable animal and you are not prepared for it. We don’t talk about loss and it’s something we will all face in our lives. It’s been a terrible year and I’m finding it difficult.’

He also addressed how his transgender Emmerdale character Matty Barton had a rough time with the soap after discovering he was being cheated on by his mother Moira and girlfriend Amy.

Barton is devastated to find out the couple lied to him about who really shot former Woolpack co-owner Al Chapman.

He said: “Poor Matty had a rough time in Emmerdale but there was always so much love in my family home and Mum was the most important person in my life.”

Ash admitted Christmas will be difficult for the family as it will be the first without her mother.

He said: “I’m sure we’ll all have our moments. But we want to recreate her amazing spirit and energy for her two grandchildren as she was such an amazing Nanna.

“We want to make her enjoy it – and if she’s watching, we hope she’ll be impressed.”

The actor shared how he was “overwhelmed” by some of the positive reactions he received.

“The letters I have received and the comments from people have been overwhelming. That’s why I wanted to play that character.”

The TV star also told Lorraine that when he first joined Emmerdale, his story was only meant to last a few months before bosses decided to keep him.

He said: “When I started it was a three month contract and to still be there two years later is amazing.

“I did every job I could. I was an elf at Christmas. When I got this job I was so grateful.”
