The Epic Games Launcher is rapidly growing in popularity as more and more interesting titles are released on it. With this increased traffic comes more and more technical issues for the launcher. One of these problems that you may encounter is known as Socket Open Error. Here is how you can try to fix this error.
How to fix Epic Games socket open error
Check the status of the Epic Games servers
The first thing you can do when you encounter this error is Check the Epic Games server status to see if they are online. The issue could be caused by an issue on Epic’s side that has caused the legacy servers to go down. If the servers are disconnected, you will not be able to play games or access the launcher.

Switch to a wired internet connection
Nowadays it is much easier to connect to the internet via Wi-Fi. Speeds can be pretty good, and not having to find a wired connection always helps. As common as WiFi connections are, they are still weaker than a good old-fashioned wired LAN connection. Use a cable connection get a much more reliable connection with faster speeds. That means less packet loss and lower ping, which is always a plus.
Disable any existing firewalls
Firewalls are great but can sometimes cause problems when it comes to accessing third-party software on our computers. Because of this, disable temporarily is often a quick fix. It should be noted that disabling your firewall should only be done to find out if this is the problem. If the firewall turns out to be the problem, make sure you add all Epic Games products to the firewall as exceptions.
- Navigate to beginning Menu.
- Access… Switchboard.
- Click on system and safety.
- Click on Windows Firewall.
- Here you can switch Turn on Windows Firewall on or off, but note that this step may require an administrator password.
- Last, under each network locationselect the Turn off Windows Firewall option
Disable VPN and proxy servers
Unfortunately, Epic Games will not work when using VPN or proxy servers in your network. Epic claims that it causes problems that cannot be solved on their end if they are enabled. So if you get this error, try disabling VPN and proxy server to see if that fixes the problem.
If you’ve tried all of the above fixes, we recommend opening a support ticket with Epic Games directly. They can investigate your error in more detail and advise you on the possible cause.
