Europe is courting Qatar for an alternative to Russian gas

DOHA, Qatar — This tiny kingdom on the Persian Gulf is emerging as one of Europe’s greatest hopes to wean itself off Russian natural gas, in another sign of how the war in Ukraine is changing the world’s energy relations.

Germany, France, Belgium and Italy are in talks with Qatar to buy long-term liquefied natural gas, Qatari and European officials said. Germany’s Economics Minister Robert Habeck flew to Qatar this month to announce an energy partnership and a commitment to build its country’s first-ever terminal to receive shipments of liquefied natural gas from Qatar and other gas producers.
