Matias Vecino is now almost certain to leave Inter Milan when his contract expires at the end of the season, months after Everton were reportedly in pole position for his transfer.
This is acc Calciomercato, who reports that the Uruguayan is frustrated after a difficult season so far at the San Siro. Simone Inzaghi has rarely used the midfielder since taking charge of the Serie A side last year to write on the wall an impending split.
Vecino has made just two Italian top-flight appearances so far this season, playing Bologna at home in September and Turin away earlier this month. Instead, 14 of his 16 appearances came off the bench, for a total of a meager 361 minutes of action.
Inzaghi has also included the 30-year-old in the starting XI just once in the Nerazzurri’s eight Champions League games, for 124 minutes in four games. He has also opened just one and has appeared in just two of their four domestic cup games, bringing his total minutes to 555.
Everton target Matias Vecino is now almost certain to leave Inter Milan on a free transfer
Inzaghi’s lack of confidence is guaranteed to send Vecino through the San Siro exit door in June. A result that could draw the attention of figures in the Goodison Park hierarchy.
That’s because Calciomercato noted that Everton were in pole position for Vecino’s transfer in January when Inter Milan tried to sell. The Nerazzurri and his agent Alessandro Lucci have spoken to several sides in Italy and abroad to push ahead with his likely exit, including the Toffees.
The San Siro side tried to seal a sale to save the rest of his 5 million euros per season (£80k-a/w) salary. But they ended up keeping theirs €24 million (20 million pounds) signing, the assistant to Antonio Conte Cristian Stellini claimed “always” delivers during the Spurs boss’s tenure.
Now Everton could look to rekindle their end-of-season interest and secure a free transfer once Vecino leaves Inter Milan. But Frank Lampard will need to ensure the Toffees remain a Premier League side to offer an attractive target for the club’s winter goal.
