Music is something that has helped bring films to life since the invention of film, and while films are no longer silent, licensed songs and film scores are important tools in getting just the right feel to a scene.

Day Shift is Netflix’s latest horror action comedy and although it tells the story of a working class father who secretly works for a vampire hunters’ association, it uses heavy music use throughout to add emotion and a badass feel.

Starring Jamie Foxx, Dave Franco and Snoop Dogg, the film tells the story of Bud Jablonski, a working-class father who makes a living as a pool cleaner in the San Fernando Valley.

Little does Bud’s family know, however, that the business is secretly fronting a band of vampire hunters scouring Los Angeles in search of the blood-sucking fiends.

Any movie with Snoop Dogg among the highest-paid actors is bound to feature a lot of music, and Day Shift doesn’t disappoint with 17 songs on its soundtrack.

Who composed the score?

Alongside a variety of hip-hop songs, Day Shift also helps set the tone with a bombastic score that’s the work of composer Tyler Bates.

The Los Angeles-born musician and composer grew up in Chicago but returned to Los Angeles in the 1990s to pursue a music career, with his first film score being in the independent sci-fi film Blue Flame.

Since then, Tyler has written music for more than 120 films and TV shows, with his most notable compositions including the Guardians of the Galaxy films, the John Wick films, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, several installments in the Halloween franchise, as well as a Variety of Zack Snyder films including Dawn of the Dead, Sucker Punch, 300 and 2009’s Watchmen.

Just in time for the arrival of Day Shift, Tyler’s moody score has been released on Spotify and Apple Music.
