Initially, it looked like Bowles missed out on his chance to become head coach this season when all other positions were filled.

The 58-year-old has interviewed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings and Las Vegas Raiders to name a few. However, all of those clubs decided to go in different directions.

Although all good things come to those who wait and that couldn’t be more true for Bowles.

He had more than 28 years as both a player and an assistant before getting his first head coach with the Jets in 2015.

Bowles’ tenure got off to a hot start, going on June 10 of his first year and just missing post-production, but it all fell apart after that.

All in all, he was the head coach for four seasons:

  • 2015: 10-6
  • 2016: 5-11
  • 2017: 5-11
  • 2018: 4-12

After being fired by the Jets, Bowles found solace in his mentor’s arms with the Buccaneers.

He was originally hired as defensive coordinator in 2019 and will now head the organization as the next head coach.

The 69-year-old Arians will now take on a “main office role” with the team up and running “out of the box”.

Bowles now becomes the sixth minority head coach in the NFL:

  • Robert Saleh (Jet)
  • Mike McDaniel (Miami Dolphins)
  • Lovie Smith (Texans in Houston)
  • Mike Tomlin (Pittsburgh Steelers)
  • Ron Rivera (Washington Soccer Team)

The timing may seem odd on the surface, but as Arians separately explained to NBC Sports, “with the organization perhaps in the best shape in its history, with the return of Tom Brady I want to see Todd in a position to succeed and not have to lose some [crappy] Work. Maybe I’ll retire next year, in February. So I control the story now. I don’t control it next February because [if] Brady is injured, we go 10-7, and it’s an open interview for the job I have 31 [coaches and their] families depend on me. My wife is very big about not letting all those families down.”

In the NFL, you just get so many hits at the pinata, and no one knows it better than Bowles. After his defeat with the Jets, he had many opportunities to return as head coach, but he patiently waited for the right opportunity.

The Arians always have Bowles back and it’s no different with this decision. He told King that “whenever he chooses to step down” he wants Bowles to be his replacement and now he will.

Here’s part of Arians’ official statement after the news went public on Wednesday night:

“I really started thinking about my personal transformation plan at the start of this season. When I leave, I want to make sure Todd Bowles has the best chance at success. A lot of head coaches fall into failure situations, and I don’t want that to happen to Todd.”
