Ex-Tory leader Sir Jake Berry speaks about battles with depression sparked by his brother’s death

Former Conservative Party leader Sir Jake Berry has spoken out about his mental health problems, which were sparked after the death of his brother.

Sir Berry, MP for Rossendale and Darwen and former Cabinet Secretary, admitted he has suffered from depression and that it will “come back”.

In an interview with Gloria De Piero, set to air tomorrow at 6pm on GB News, he said his struggles with poor mental health came after a series of tragedies, including the death of his brother, leading to “really dark days “ led.

He told the GB News presenter and former Labor MP that talking to his wife and others about his mental health has helped him to cope with his depression.

Sir Berry said he battled “pretty badly with depression” while at university but “kind of sort of sorted it out” when he was in his early 20s.

But after several challenges: the death of his brother, the resignation of his post as Northern Powerhouse Minister and the death of his mother, who died shortly thereafter, he found it “really difficult just to cope with everyday life”.

He said his biggest obstacle in coping with his mental illness was “saying I have a problem” – but he said the best thing is to talk to his closest family and friends.

“It’s just that point where you kind of sit down and say, ‘Actually, I think I have a problem with that. I think I should look for a cure,” he said. “Whether that’s talking to people or medication, then you can start taking that journey back to who you were.”

Sir Berry said his depression can and will return but thinks he will be well prepared if it gets as far as he has been through before.

He said he’s learned not to “suffer in silence” but instead to talk to other people because you “won’t be the only person who has had this experience and you can free and empower other people to talk about it.” “.

He said his wife opened up to him about her own struggles with postnatal depression so they were able to discuss each other’s experiences in a healthy way.

Sir Berry said a “key message” is not to suffer alone with mental health, as “there’s a bright sunny day on the other side and you come out of it”.

The politician also shared his experiences during the final days of Liz Truss’ post-‘mini-budget’ premiership, when the struggling PM asked him to set up a ‘war room’ at No.10.
