Aston Villa have joined Marseille star Boubacar Kamara as Steven Gerrard tries to bring in a new midfielder.
That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who took to Twitter to confirm that Kamara was on Villa’s wish list in the closing days of the January transfer window.
Villa owner Gerrard is keen to bring in another centre-back with Marvelous Nakamba currently out due to a long-term injury.
Despite owning the likes of Douglas Luiz, John McGinn, Jacob Ramsey and Morgan Sanson, Gerrard still wants another central defender.
Juventus player of the year Rodrigo Bentancur seems to be the main target, but Romano insists Kamara is also on the radar.
Kamara, 22, was born in Marseille and has been playing for his hometown club since the age of 5.
Now with nearly 150 first-team appearances, Kamara has excelled for the Ligue 1 side, playing as a central defender or holding midfielder, with his versatility appealing.
Described as ‘phenomenal’ by former Marseille teammate Rolando, Kamara is highly regarded in France.
The problem for Marseille is that Kamara’s contract expires this summer and he is currently intent on leaving.
Villa can now sense an opportunity to come in and offer Marseille a discount deal for Kamara, enticing them to sell just before he leaves this summer.
However, Villa will not easily sign Kamara, because a number of other Premier League clubs want him as well.
Eddie Howe is understood to want Kamara at Newcastle United, while Leeds United also very much. When Kamara arrived in Marseille, now Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa was their first team coach.
Kamara might be tempted to wait until he’s become a free agent before deciding on his next move, but you can’t exactly blame Villa for trying.
