Factories have taken a small step back to normal

American manufacturers got a little cooler last month. How that happened is important.

On Tuesday, the Institute of Supply Management said that its index of manufacturing activity slide to 58.7 in December from 61.1 in November. Anything above 50 is considered an expansion of activity, so it is not if factories were still not busy last month. However, economists had expected slower recession activity.
