Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith flashed a smile.

The vibes looked different in Flowery Branch this season as Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith was arrested smile often and offer more praise than criticism.

And exhibit B, where Smith pays tribute to rookie defender Desmond Ridder:

Behind the scenes, the things that he did, as a rookie, were really from start to finish,” Smith said at a press conference on June 15. “The way he works, as we see it. I do the rookie walk, as we do these settings and in the field, and his command. Then you are betting on some material thing that you see sometimes to catch up. He’s light years ahead of most young midfielders, in terms of play from the neck up. I’ll give him that compliment.”

Ridder surprised himself

As any rookie knows, the transition from college to professional level is tough –– especially for midfielders.

Unlike most offense positions, Ridder must not only know his position, but must also know all others.

But as Smith mentioned, Ridder is catching things faster than most QBS rookies.

In fact, he was even a little surprised.

“Overall knowledge of the offence – I won’t lie, I think I’m going to have a bit of a hard time,” says Ridder. “We almost finished all of our settings and did all of those checks, and I was well aware of that. That surprised me, to be honest. I’m not saying I won’t pick it up, but I think maybe a little longer, a few days. I was able to take it on quite smoothly. “

He even performed very well in the leadership aspect, which is important as a midfielder.

“It was just the flow of it, the way my sentences came out in a group chat with the command I had at the scriptwriter line, just seeing the defense and seeing the offense.” Ridder said. “Everything just came to me.”

The Falcons plan to roll with Mariota at QB1

While Ridder has adjusted well to the professional level, the Falcons expect veteran Marcus Mariota to take the lead, while Ridder continues to take advantage of all he can as a backup.

“We certainly had more competition,” said Smith, according to The Athletic. “Marcus being a veteran gives us the opportunity to move forward. As with any position on this team, the best player will play, but obviously, Marcus is the vet, which is how things will begin. “

Of course, things could change between now and the regular season, but it all depends on Ridder on how well he performs and competes in training camp next July.

“I’m not going to sit here and speculate or give you our development plan,” Smith said. “We’ll see what (Ridder) looks like when he gets here. If you’re asking if we’ll order a package for him, we’ll see. We have a long way to go until September.

I won’t tell you our long-term plan or our short-term plan. We know what we want to see behind the scenes. It will come out on its own. Please look forward to it.”
