Falcons’ HC Arthur Smith has made a decision on the starting center: report

The Atlanta Falcons center Matt Hennessy #57 and Drew Dalman #67.

The Atlanta Falcons have had a handful of competitive fights this offseason, and the center position was one of them, between veteran center Matt Hennessey and sophomore center Drew Dalman.

However, who will face the New Orleans Saints in Week 1 remains a mystery.

The media asked head coach Arthur Smith Monday, September 5 if he had made the decision to take the center job.

Corresponding ESPN’s Michael RothsteinSmith has made a decision but doesn’t want to reveal it until the depth map is released on Tuesday.

Rothstein later reported that Dalman had been working with the first team on the part of the practice where the media was allowed.

Dalman isn’t worried about the starting job

Trash talk is normal at any competition, but nothing happened between Hennessey and Dalman during training camp.

“Hennessey is a good friend of mine,” Dalman said after a practice session last week. “Every day we’re friends and when we start practicing meetings and all that, we help each other out. He taught me a lot and helped me. It’s usually just pretty constructive things about practice.”

Dalman and Hennessey have been in touch with first teamers throughout the offseason, so there hasn’t been a clear indication of who might start against the Saints on Sunday.

And while fans may be wondering, Dalman isn’t.

“I just practice every day and I don’t worry. I have my own checklist of things I can improve, so that’s my main focus. I don’t spend too much time worrying about it.”

Nothing “magical” happens to the O-Line.

There will be a lot of pressure on the offensive line that allowed Matt Ryan to sack 40 last season. And according to Dalman, not much has changed on offense from last year — other than the fact that they now play as a unit.

“Nothing magical or playful,” Dalman said when asked what looks different on the offensive line. “Really, we just have one philosophy and if we come out and work hard every day, it’s just about learning to execute the things that we really want to do. First and foremost just being in shape, learning to perform and act as a unit. Nothing special, just that.”

Dalman had the pleasure of blocking for Ryan last season and playing 68 offensive snaps as a rookie. Now he’ll be helping keep Falcons new quarterback Marcus Mariota on his feet, who he doesn’t think there’s much of a difference between the two vets.

“They are obviously both great and incredible professionals as I learned a lot from both and Marcus was a pleasure. It was just great for both of them and Marcus has been a great leader for us.”

The Falcons will release their Week 1 depth chart against the Saints on Tuesday, September 6th. Then we’ll see if the Stanford product won the starting spot or not, or if they give it up to the veteran. j
