Some fans of ABC’s “American Idol” are upset with the way the Hollywood Week Genre Challenge episode, which aired March 29, 2022, was edited, as well as how much backstories of the contestants were included.

The Hollywood Week Genre Challenge episode was the first after the auditions, meaning judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie reduced the number of contestants from those who made it through the auditions for the first time.

Fans were upset with the show’s editing

Some viewers discussing the show live on Reddit Live discussion thread spoke about editing the show and including the backstories of some of the contestants.

“With all due respect, I don’t need any more stories from these candidates now. Just a really quick reminder of the audition and then move on to the mentoring/acting.” one person wrote.

another wrote, “I miss singing shows…these mini Lifetime movies are too much.”

“I haaaaaa how this episode is being edited.” reads an answer. “I’d like to hear at least a SMALL snippet of each on each line?”

Some went so far as to challenge other editors.

“STOP CUTTING BACK AND JUST SHOW THE VOICE!” one person wrote. “Editors must be fired.”

Some people are upset with how the season is going in general.

“They make it seem so predictable now, and like someone could do it by auditioning,” one person wrote. “Because they only showed the auditions of people who would make it through this round! I keep saying ‘yeah, remember his audition so he’s definitely through’…annoyed!”

another wrote, “Oh, we do the chewy stuff during Hollywood week too?”

Some want the judges to be nicer

Some people watching the episode exclaimed the way the judges told some contestants they would pass and others they would not.

“May I be honest with you?” one person wrote. “The judges need to stop faking everyone. There are human lives at stake.”

A person answered to that“The problem for me is that these judges pretend they’re all nice and supportive, but then pull off these stunts.”

“That was stupid and mean” another person wrote.

Others simply felt that the way they delivered the news was unnecessary.

“These fake-outs are so predictable,” reads an answer. “I knew Lionel would say something cheesy like, ‘You’re not ready… to go home!'”

Other criticisms of the show had to do with the number of country singers, the lack of performances by people who didn’t make it, and some standout audition candidates who weren’t singled out.

Next up is the Hollywood Week Duets Challenge, where contestants are paired with another contestant to perform a duet. They are then judged by Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie before moving on to the next round of the competition.
