Some fans say they won’t be tuning in to “Dancing With the Stars” again after the show announced a move from ABC to the Disney+ streaming platform.
Disney+ announced on Twitter on April 8, 2022 that the show will now be the first live show the streaming service is rolling out.
“Get the mirror ball ready” reads the tweet. “Dancing With the Stars” is moving to a new home when it returns this fall as the first LIVE series on #DisneyPlus #DWTS.”
The show will no longer air live on ABC, only on the parent network’s streaming service.
Fans used the responses to let broadcasters know how they felt about the move, with some people saying they would no longer watch the show at all.
“Well, I’m not going to watch it on Disney, so I hope it’s still on TV.” one person tweeted. “If not, it was nice to know you!”
Some fans will stop watching the show
Some fans of the show took to a reddit thread to talk about their thoughts along the way.
“I’m not sure how I feel about it personally, but I think viewership will go down.” one person wrote. “My grandma loved watching this show but she never owned a computer and was amazed by smartphones and tablets. She would never have streamed it.”
Another person answered“Bye I guess.”
Others, however, think the move is wise.
“Tbh, I think that might work.” one answer is. “I’m not going to get a live TV subscription to watch, but I’ll probably pay Disney+ for a few months to do so.”
Others said they thought the professional dancers should prepare for the future.
“I hope the pros start looking at their options beyond the show.” one person wrote.
another wrote, “This will kill the show, why?”
“This is the end,” another answer is.
At the time of writing, professional dancers Gleb Savchenko and Daniella Karagach have shared the post on their Instagram Stories, stating that they are excited.
Some think the show won’t last
In response, fans posited that the show could end after the next two seasons.
“Really? Beginning of the end. I wish ABC would cancel it and another network would pick it up. one person wrote.
Another person answered, “This should have some interesting implications for things like voting and results, which were really complicated by the need to fit everything into limited network spaces. I would imagine they now have the flexibility to do a separate results display or make other changes to accommodate time zones.”
Others have mentioned that they think the show could benefit from the change.
“It can go both ways” one person wrote. “The show could attract a brand new audience that is much younger, especially since streaming is used by the majority of young people these days. However, half of the core audience is over 50 and this will most likely be detrimental to the age demo.”
Dancing With the Stars returns in Fall 2022 for Season 31, which will air exclusively on Disney+.
