Father banned from parking in his own driveway in Newmains after a foot-high curb was put in place

An angry father has claimed he was prevented from parking in his driveway after a foot-high curb was installed following the construction of a new £20million school.

Colin Gibson has lived in Park Drive in the village of Newmains in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, for eight years, but problems arose after the completion of work on the new school centre.

The builders of the new Newmains and St Brigid junction left Colin unable to park in his own driveway after the high curb was built, forcing him to park on the street where his car was already damaged.

He said: “The council and its contractors have built a path to the new school, which is fine, but the curb in front of my house is a foot high, which means there is absolutely no way for me, my wife or my son to park my car into our driveway without damaging them.

“I’ve spoken to the council and contractors when they were on site and asked them to do something about it but I’m getting nowhere.

‘It’s so frustrating. Within a month of being forced to park on the street I’ve had two damaged wing mirrors, it’s ridiculous.

“I spoke to a council member who advised me to get legal advice. Why should I have to pay for an attorney when I did absolutely nothing wrong and someone else screwed it up?’

The shared campus, which includes the Newmains Family Learning Center for kindergarten children, has been used by more than 500 children and staff since it opened last month.

A spokesman for North Lanarkshire Council said: “Following a series of meetings between the resident and the main contractor, a proposal was developed to allow vehicle access to the rear of the property.

“However, when contractors recently approached the local resident to confirm a start date for the work to be carried out, they were surprised to learn that their proposals were no longer acceptable.

“The contractors remain committed to agreeing an acceptable solution with the resident to resolve this matter.”
