Fears, phobias, depression and anxiety – the hypnotherapist has it under control

After 14 years as a police officer and struggling with mental health issues, Chris O’Connor knew he needed help.

He tried different forms of therapy with little success and it wasn’t until he started Solution Focused Hypnotherapy that he felt he was making any progress.

Chris was so impressed with the treatment that he decided to become a clinical hypnotherapist and psychotherapist himself.

Here, in our latest Business of the Week feature, Chris tells us about the services he provides and how he can help people from all walks of life.

I was born in Widnes and moved to Rainhill as a child. After settling down and having a child with my partner Kieley, we moved into my current property.

Tell me something about your company. How are you? What services do you offer?

I help people suffering from a variety of brain problems such as depression, anxiety and addictions as well as PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), fears and phobias. I also help elite athletes with athletic performance and their overall well-being.

Why did you decide to open your own business?

I served in the police force for 14 years and struggled with mental health issues, particularly depression and anxiety. I was referred for therapy and experienced it in various forms, including counseling, which did little to improve my mental well-being. I then tried Solution Focused Hypnotherapy and found that it really helped. I decided I wanted to be a clinical hypnotherapist and psychotherapist and have so far helped hundreds of clients with brain issues and athletic performance.

Why this kind of business?

It is close to my heart to help people who suffer from mental health problems.

How has the Covid-19 pandemic affected your business?

I have used the time during lockdown to gain valuable experience by practicing and helping many people including ambulance workers while working as a police officer myself. Most of this work was done on a voluntary basis, not only to help people, but also to gain experience.

What makes your company different from others in the same field/area? What distinguishes your company from your competitors?

I have trained with the Clifton Practice which is considered the gold standard of hypnotherapy training. After completing the first diploma, I studied for an advanced diploma awarded by the Hypnotherapy Council. I am a member of the NCH and the Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. I complete 16 hours of CPD per year and have regular monthly supervision meetings.

I have a unique mix of experience having worked at Ashworth Hospital for seven years and serving as a Police Officer for 14 years. I was involved in some very high profile traumatic events. I am excited about my therapy because I know how effective it can be. I have excellent knowledge of the very demanding public sector and am able to help my elite athlete clients achieve their dreams and goals.

What’s next? What do the next few months hold in store for you and your company?

I want to continue to help people from all walks of life and all backgrounds using the clinical experience I have built up over the past four years. I find it easy to relate to people and want to help those who are dealing with their own mental health struggles. I want to continue to help top athletes improve their sporting mindset and become the best. My goal is to demonstrate excellence in all areas of my work.
