FFXIV Endwalker server queue is so bad they stopped selling the game

Due to an ongoing server issue, sales of Final Fantasy XIV have been halted, a few days after the release of the Endwalker expansion.

After days of server crashes and a flood of new Final Fantasy XIV players, the game’s sales pages were suspended while Square-Enix got the situation under control. It is believed that the popularity of gameand the successful launch of the FFXIV Endwalker DLC is partly responsible for the server crash.

Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker was released on December 7, 2021, to critical acclaim. Since the expansion’s release, FFXIV’s player base is now reported to be over 24 million users, with servers bearing the weight of a large influx of new players. Square-Enix has put the game on hold until they can adapt to the increase in traffic.

Who has been affected by the suspended sale of FFXIV?

The good news is that existing players won’t be affected by Square-Enix’s decision to suspend Final Fantasy XIV sales, as they already own the title. However, those who wish to purchase the game, its expansion, or join the free trial will not be able to do so until the servers are back up and running.

When will FFXIV’s servers return to normal?

Square-Enix has confirmed that while the increase in traffic caused the server issue, the root cause was a bug in the software that has been around since version 1.0 of Final Fantasy XIV. The developers will release an update on December 21, 2021 to address the issue and allow the game to continue to be sold.

Another patch will be released on January 4, 2022. This patch will aim to ensure that the problem does not happen again and that the servers can accommodate the growing number of players.

FFXIV extends free trial

Square-Enix will also extend the free trial by 14 days to ensure those affected by the issue can still take advantage of the free game period. Those who created an active subscription before the patch was released will be able to take advantage of this, getting a 21-day free trial.

Of course, existing players won’t be able to join, since their free trial has expired, as they won’t be affected. The extension is only available to those who signed up for Final Fantasy XIV only to find that server issues prevented them from playing.
