Figures show how many prisoners died in Liverpool prison last year

MORE than 300 people died in prisons in England and Wales last year, ten of them in Liverpool prisons.

Official data from the Howard League for Penal Reform shows that 301 people died in prison in 2022, including 74 people who died by suicide.

Those numbers are lower than in 2021, when 371 people died — the highest number in a calendar year since current records began.

The Bulletin says prisons recorded 54,761 incidents of self-harm in the 12 months ended September 2022, at a rate of one every nine and a half minutes. Self-harm incidents increased by 1 percent in men’s prisons and by 18 percent in women’s prisons.

During the same period, prisons recorded 20,872 assaults — an 11 percent increase over the previous 12 months.

Andrea Coomber KC (Hon.), Chief Executive of the Howard League for Penal Reform, said: “These grim figures show the scale of the mental health crisis in prisons across England and Wales. The alarming number of self-harm incidents – one every nine and a half minutes – should draw everyone’s attention to the unbearable conditions faced by those who live and work behind bars.

“While the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic seems to be behind us, six people die in prison every week.

“Even though restrictions in the community were eased long ago, thousands of men and women in prison remain locked in their cells for more than 20 hours every day.

“The number of prisoners on remand is at its highest level in more than half a century. The damage caused by this is widespread and still not fully understood.

“While the government pursues its wrong plans and builds more prisons without considering the consequences, these tragedies lie forgotten in the background.

“The Howard League will continue to bring them to the fore.”
