Five Dock Bowling Club Cops Criticized for ‘Mistaken’ Name and $45 Chicken Cutlets

A trendy Sydney restaurant that has jacked up the price of its chicken schnitzel is also facing criticism over a misleading name.

Five Dock Bowling Club’s onsite Italian restaurant, Skinny Tony’s, was the subject of heated debate Monday over its $45 chicken schnitzel with two sides.

The chicken schnitzel itself is $28.90, fries are $6.90, and salad or mashed potatoes each add $8.90.

Even Nine’s Today show host Karl Stefanovic made a splash over the high price by breaking into the restaurant, which opened less than a week ago.

‘That’s why Sydney lost the plan. It’s not even good there,’ he said.

The redesigned restaurant occupies the same location as historic Bowlo, but isn’t actually a registered club.

$35 sausage for dinner? That’s just the beginning with a price list that bears little resemblance to the traditional local Aussie club

If you ordered a chicken parmy with two sides (fries and salad) and a single beer, you’d pay a whopping $63. This is a meal for one person, not for two.

If you wanted humble sausages, you’d pay $34.90 for the grilled pork and fennel dumplings.

The cheapest steak on offer is $54.90 for a 16 ounce grain-fed, 21-day aged cut of Riverina beef. Or you can spend $120.90 on a 1kg grass-fed tomahawk Angus steak.

The pizza menu offers six options priced at over $30 — unusual, even for the many specialty pizza places in the Inner West.

Most entrees range from $16.90 to $28.90, with pre-meal calamari with salt and pepper costing $23.90 and baked figs with prosciutto $27.

The four skewer options range from $38.90 for two sticks of marinated chicken to $46.90 for a combo (two each of lamb, shrimp, and chicken).

Venue owner Pierre Moio defended his prices earlier in the day, saying he only kept the historical name so people would know where it is “not to denote the offering”.

“We are not a registered association. We have no poker machines, we are not subsidized by gambling. We are a private restaurant,” Mr Moio told the Daily Telegraph.

The restaurant’s Facebook page categorizes the business as a “sports club.”

The high prices brought many players online to complain on the venue’s Google reviews page.

One man wrote that Mr Moio’s logic was “a cop out”.

“If you’re not a club, your name shouldn’t literally be Five Dock Bowling Club,” he said.

He added that not offering better quality food is “a poor justification considering there are many clubs that offer better value for money”.

Another man commented: “$60 for a chicken parmi with fries and a beer. You are dreaming?’

‘Bring back old Bowlo.’
