Lakers star LeBron James did not comment on the outrageous nine-year sentence the Russian government handed WNBA star Brittney Griner for possession of marijuana. He last spoke about Griner on his show, The Shop on HBO, last month – before Griner was convicted – but he still appeared confused by his reaction to the situation.

Most recently, it was from Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, who wrote on Twitter that James was one of the “fools” who criticized America for not making sure Griner was brought home.

Portnoy wrote: “This story is ridiculous and sad. What’s more ridiculous is that idiots (like Lebron) are somehow blaming the US. It’s stories like this that will make people realize that no matter how difficult this country is, sometimes how lucky we are to live here. “

As James talked about the subject, he wondered how Griner must have felt being abandoned in a foreign country, and if she would want to go back to America afterwards.

James told The Shop: “I’m trying to imagine and it’s hard for me to put myself into what she’s going through. “Like she’s a great human being. A wonderful person. Apparently, I’ve been with her a few times. You always feel that, you know, if you come from somewhere, you always feel like they’ve got you covered. And, in a sense, now, how can she feel like America has her back? I would feel like, ‘Do I even want to go back to America?’ If I went more than 130 days. And I feel like it’s zero effort.”

James Clarified Shop commented on Griner

James received backlash at the time for those comments and attempted to bring them back in a social media post.

He wrote on Twitter: “My comments on ‘The Shop’ regarding Brittney Griner did not knock our beautiful country down,” James wrote on social media. How emotional she might be feeling along with so many emotions, thoughts, etc inside the cage she has been in for over 100 days! Short story #BringHerHome.”

Griner was jailed in Russia on February 17, just days before the country started its war with Ukraine. She flew to the country for her WNBA end-of-season break with BC UMMC Ekaterinburg in Yekaterinburg, part of the Russian Premier League.

Regular James vs. Griner

James, too, was repeatedly compared to Griner because supporters of the US government did more to bring Griner home.

Former NBA center turned LeBron James troll Enes Kanter suggested James trade himself for Griner, write on twitter“Continue to take your freedom for granted.”

Last month, Griner’s coach with the Phoenix Mercury, Vanessa Nygaard, criticized the US government for not taking action on the situation, saying, “If it was LeBron, he would stay home, wouldn’t he?”

It was a sentiment that was repeated over and over again. Former NBA assistant coach (now head coach of the Las Vegas Aces) Becky Hammon, who became a naturalized Russian and played for the Russian national team in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, pleaded with President Vladimir Putin “does the right thing” this week, adding an analogy to James.

“However, it is hard to imagine that if this were, you know, LeBron James, that he would still be sitting there in the cell. Maybe he can. Maybe not. I do not know. But it’s hard not to let your mind be there,” Hammon said in an interview with Reuters,
