Philadelphia Eagles forward Andre Dillard stretches before training session.

For New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson to reach his full potential in 2022, he needs to stay upright.

The protection around him will be paramount for Wilson to have a chance next season. While Gang Green has flirted with adding a few different options, perhaps the commercial route might be the best way to go.

Former NFL scout and current contributor to the Jets Country on Sports Illustrated, Daniel Kelly recently explained why the Jets should trade for Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Andre Dillard.

“Trading for a quality offensive tackle has become the number one priority for Jets General Manager Joe Douglas right now. It’s time to sound the alarm and pick up the red phone and make a deal. The Eagles’ Andre Dillard is said to be available, and he’s exactly what the Jets need. “

The giant-sized (6-foot-5, 315-pound) big man originally joined the NFL in 2019 as the 22nd overall pick in the first round.

Dillard struggled to get on the field and was unpopular with the Eagles. ESPN’s Tim McManus said the veteran “could attract commercial interest from teams that need to work out” this season.

Over three seasons, the former Washington State production only started at 9 out of 49 possible games. Dillard played 31 games in total but missed the entire 2020 campaign due to a biceps tear.

In Kelly’s column, a possible transaction price was not discussed although it is not expected to be exorbitant based on what he has achieved in his NFL career so far.

While he’s had his fair share of struggles, no one knows him better than the GM Jets. Douglas, before accepting his job in green and white, worked for the Philadelphia Eagles before that NFL draft.

That past connection will provide plenty of insight for him to feel comfortable triggering the deal.

No excuses

Whether through trade, free agency, waiver transfer, or even doing the exchange at your local grocery store at 3 a.m. in the parking lot: Jets need another agency to handle attack reason.

Mekhi Becton and George Fant are really solid starters who have proven that when healthy, they can be active. The point though is that the stability caveat of that equation isn’t something you can mess around with.

Neither Becton nor Fant have ever completed a full season, so if you walk into camp with just two capable players on the roster, you’re clearly playing with fire.

Kelly also makes another really good point in his column on why Jet Force should add another body to handle the attack sooner rather than later:

“Trading with Dillard gives the Jets the insurance they need, plus it will give Douglas leverage with Fant.”

Fant is negotiating a contract with the Jets and feels pretty good. We mentioned that Becton had some issues and that they didn’t have a capable backup, which means Fant has strong leverage to ask for whatever he wants.

No matter what happens to Fant this season, the Jets must have hope for the best and expect the worst kind of strategy. It would be fun if Becton and Fant remained healthy, but you have to be prepared for the worst and have people ready to step up if needed.
