Survivor: Thailand contestant John Raymond has been arrested and charged with cruelty to young people after he allegedly taped students’ mouths shut. Here’s what you need to know:

John Raymond, 60, first appeared on the fifth season of “Survivor” in 2002 at the age of 40 but was voted first out of the game. Assigned to the Chuay Gahn tribe, he almost immediately turned his fellow tribesmen away with his bossy personality and desire for leadership. The final straw came on Day 2 when he pranked his tribe by telling them that a small saltwater pool would be their main water source, leading to its elimination On the next day.

Back then, Raymond was a pastor from Slidell, Louisiana, and that hasn’t changed since. Since then, however, he has also become the principal at Slidell’s Lakeside Christian Academywhere he was arrested on Thursday for allegedly taped the mouths of students, according to The New Orleans Advocate (NOLA).

Slidell police said Raymond’s arrest came after the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services filed a complaint about “possible child abuse” at the school in late March.

Detectives said Raymond wrapped packing tape around the heads of three 13-year-old male students for “excessive talking”. The tape later had to be removed by another administrator after 45 minutes, but was wrapped so tightly that police said the removal process was “painful” and scissors had to be used. The boys also appeared to have difficulty breathing.

Raymond surrendered after police obtained an arrest warrant for him. He was sentenced to the city jail and was then due to be transported to St. Tammany Parish Jail where bail will be set.


Raymond was a “well-known” political figure in his community

According to NOLA, Raymond is a “well-known” pastor in the area, probably in part because he ran for political office there a few years ago.

In 2018, Raymond, a Republican, ran unsuccessfully for the 90th District of the Louisiana House of Representatives, which is based on Slidell. He ran broadly for his support of then-President Donald Trump and his opposition to same-sex marriage, describing himself as the most conservative candidate in the race. He made the runoff, but lost to Mary DuBuissonanother Republican, per NOLA. Since then, DuBuisson has served as that district’s state representative.

Raymond is also a member of the governing body of the Louisiana Republican Party and chairs its Credentials Committee. per NOLA. He was also vice chairman of the St. Tammany Parish Republican Party — the parish where Slidell is based.

Raymond isn’t the first Survivor: Thailand contestant to get in trouble with the law. Season winner Brian Heidik is also known in the show’s fanbase for shooting a puppy with an arrow in Georgia in 2006, a few years after his win. according to the LA Times. He attempted to flee from police but was quickly arrested and claimed in court that he thought the pup was a predatory coyote. He was later released on bail.

Survivor 42 airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific on CBS. The finale will air on Wednesday, May 25, 2022.
