Forspoken rates your combos like Devil May Cry

Forspoken will feature over 100 spells and abilities – and you’ll want to know how to use them together as it features a Devil May Cry style combo rating system.
In an IGN-exclusive Gamescom gameplay video, we see a series of combat encounters in which the game’s heroine, Frey, switches between casting spells on the fly and uses combos to take out groups of enemies. The game makes it very clear that you are rated on the potency of your spell – a counter counts up from rank D to A, with experience multipliers offered for good performances.
The game improves your scores in a number of categories, from using specific spells that enemies are vulnerable to, chaining multiple spells together, dodging enemies with parkour, switching spells during combat, and seemingly more.
It seems like there will be a lot to do as well. In an introductory video, Luminous Productions’ Raio Mitsuno said: “The core of Forspoken’s gameplay is based around exciting action. As you master over 100 of Frey’s various spells and abilities, you can enjoy robust combat, exciting and intuitive magical parkour, and diverse missions.”
The gameplay itself showcases a large number of combos, from trapping enemies in a floating bubble that you can burst with piercing attacks, to using a water jet to shoot into the air, to sniping with fire attacks from above . There’s also a shot of Frey seemingly using an ice surfboard to trick off a waterfall, which isn’t a combo, but I just liked it.
After several delays, Forspoken is scheduled for release on January 24, 2023. The game takes place in the fantastical realm of Athia and follows Frey after she is drawn to this mysterious, magical world from modern-day New York. In our hands-on preview last year, we enjoyed the “unbalanced approach to the JRPG formula,” even if the game is “maybe just a slight twitch.”
