France’s Macron and far-right Le Pen lead in the first round of presidential elections

PARIS — President Emmanuel Macron and far-right leader Marine Le Pen led the first round of France’s presidential election, according to Exit polls, setting the stage for a hard-fought runoff amid fears of high inflation and immigration.

According to the polling institute Elabe, Mr. Macron won the first round with 28.5% of the votes ahead of Ms. Le Pen with 24.2%. The French President now faces a showdown with Ms Le Pen on April 24 in what polls say will be much more contested than his landslide victory five years ago.
