France’s Macron and Le Pen clash during presidential debate

PARIS – French President Emmanuel Macron and far-right leader Marine Le Pen clashed and exchanged blows over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with the candidate closer to Moscow and better equipped to deal with the economic fallout of the war.

Wednesday’s duel on national television was the first and only debate between the candidates, making it a key event for millions of French voters tuning in ahead of voting in Sunday’s runoff. Polls show Mr Macron is about 9 percentage points ahead of Ms Le Pen, a lead that pales in comparison to the 32-point lead Mr Macron achieved in 2017.
