French star Benjamin Pavard speaks bravely about his battle with depression

France and Bayern Munich star Benjamin Pavard has revealed he lost his appetite while battling depression during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020.

Pavard, 26, had moved to Germany in 2019 after joining Bayern, but as restrictions tightened and he was alone in a new country, he began to suffer.

The Frenchman has been kept away from his family and has now bravely taken on his battle with depression – something he has long “hidden” from those closest to him.

“Something was wrong in my head. At the beginning you say it’s nothing, that it’s going to pass, but when you see that it’s going to last and then you go to training and you don’t have a smile on your face, you have to react,” he told French newspaper Le Pariser.

“Like everyone else, I’m human, and even though I have a nice house with a gym, I needed human contact.

“I woke up in the morning, I had no appetite. I tried to take care of myself, cook, watch TV series. I don’t like the word depression, but that was it.

“I hid it from everyone, but today I feel a lot better. I came out of it all a better person. It changed me.”

The right-back has managed to seek help and has shown his willingness to speak openly about his struggles, something others in the game have done as well.

Pavard’s French team-mate Paul Pogba spoke openly about his mental health issues earlier this year.

Pogba is one of the most criticized stars of the game and he explained how blows to his mental state caused him to ‘isolate’.

“I’ve had depression in my career but we don’t talk about it,” Pogba told Le Figaro in March.

“Sometimes you don’t know it’s you, you just want to isolate yourself, be alone, those are unmistakable signs.”

Former Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta also revealed his mental health struggles in 2018 when he revealed his preparation for the 2010 World Cup was severely hampered by the death of his friend Dani Jarque.

Pavard won the World Cup with France in Russia in 2018 and will be looking to defend the world crown this winter in Qatar.

He played 90 minutes in a 2-0 Nations League defeat by Denmark on Sunday that saw France third in Group 1 of League A.
