Fresh Prince star defends Will Smith after Oscar drama – ‘Sometimes you have to fight back’

Fresh Prince of Bel Air’s Aunt Viv supports Will Smith after the King Richard star slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars.

Janet Hubert, who played Vivian Banks in the TV series opposite Will Smith, took to social media to defend the actor.

Hubert, who fans will remember as the original star who played Aunt Viv in the early 1990s, told Smith via Instagram that “nothing else matters.”

Hubert posted: “So PROUD OF YOU!

“You can only take so much…sometimes you have to fight back.

“Celebrate victory… nothing else matters.”

The 66-year-old added: “Both actions were wrong but Chris didn’t have to go there.”

She then took to Twitter to expand even further: “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to beat the mess out of so many people who didn’t respect me.”

What did Chris Rock say about Jada Pinkett Smith?

The shocking incident at the 2022 Oscars followed the 57-year-old comedian targeting a joke at Smith’s wife Jada, aged 50.

Jada Pinkett Smith, who was sitting next to Will and suffering from hair loss due to alopecia, didn’t seem to be enjoying the dig.

Chris said on stage: “Jada, I love you. GI Jane 2 – can’t wait to see it.”

Cameras panned over to the star, whose smile faded as she rolled her eyes.

Moments later, the Men In Black star was seen storming onto the stage before slapping Chris Rock in the face.

Hubert’s defense on social media comes as other celebrities reacted to the awards show drama.

How did celebrities react to the Oscars slap?

Shameless star Shanola Hampton tweeted: “There is NEVER a justification for VIOLENCE! Never in my life!”

While Mirai Nagasu tweeted about the fact that some countries were shown full coverage of the incident. Audio and film material was temporarily not broadcast in the UK and US due to technical difficulties. However, in Japan and Australia, for example, the live feed did not stop.

Mirai Nagasu tweeted: “Hahaha, thanks Japanese TV.”

Will and Jada Smith’s son, Jaden, simply tweeted, “And this is how we do it.” a few hours after the incident.

He later tweeted about how his father’s Oscar acceptance speech made him emotional, but has since deleted the post.

And rapper Cardi B seemed to echo the words Denzel Washington said to the Men In Black star after the drama. Denzel took Smith aside in the moments after the slap to encourage him to move on with the evening.
