‘Friends’ star Lisa Kudrow speaks out about the show’s lack of diversity

“Friends” actress Lisa Kudrow is weighing in on the controversy that the film doesn’t have many black characters in it.
Kudrow made her comments in an interview with The Daily Beast, where she discussed the lack of representation of people of color in the main character arcs.
The sitcom, which won an Emmy Award and ran from 1994 to 2004, has recently been criticized for its lack of diversity in its cast.
The interviewer brought up the question, noting that one of the program’s creators, Marta Kauffman, recently donated $5 million to Brandeis University for the advancement of education for people of color.
When asked how she felt about the lack of diversity on “Friends,” Kudrow said, “Well, I feel like this is a show created by two people who came to Brandeis and wrote about their lives after. when we go to university.”

“Especially for shows, when it becomes a character-driven comedy, you write what you know,” the actress also said.
She added, “They don’t have a business writing stories about the experience of being a person of color. I think at the time, the big problem I had was ‘Where is the apprenticeship?’ “
Kauffman took a different perspective, explaining her donation in an interview with the Los Angeles Times in June of this year.
“I’ve learned a lot over the past 20 years,” Kauffman said in an interview with Zoom with this publication. “Admitting and accepting guilt is not easy. Looking at myself in the mirror is painful. I’m ashamed that I didn’t know better 25 years ago.”
“Friends” has recurring roles with people of color, including black actors, however, the six main characters are all white.
In another interview, the show’s creator told The Hollywood Reporter in May 2021 that she’s glad she’s hired six main actors.
Kauffman explained her attachment to the actors despite the racial peculiarities of the show, saying, “I would be crazy if I didn’t hire those six actors. What can I say? Wish Lisa was black? ”
