Is Fulham hedging their bets? Or do they only accept defeat?

It certainly doesn’t feel like a coincidence that since Nottingham Forest put their foot on the accelerator and took pole position for Liverpool defender Neco Williams, Fulham appear to have eyed a number of alternative transfer targets.

The question is if the Cottagers are just refueling, biding their time before moving on, or if they’re just a fading stain in Forest’s rear-view mirror.

Corresponding Alan Nixon, Nottingham Forest have placed a £11m bid for Williams, plus a further £4m in premiums. Liverpool – a club that have a remarkable track record of selling unwanted players for astounding sums, Taiwo Awoniyi to name but one – have £15million upfront.

However, Williams’ desire to seal a permanent move to City Ground should go a long way in narrowing the rift between the two parties.

Nottingham Forest approach Liverpool’s Neco Williams

Of course, it’s common for clubs to put their eggs in multiple baskets. Williams has probably never been Fulham’s only target for right-back this summer, despite an excellent loan spell at Craven Cottage in the second half of their campaign to win the Championship title.

But reports suggest Fulham have accepted an £8million bid for Wolfsburg’s Kevin Mbabu (Sky Sports) – less than 24 hours before Nottingham Forest dropped £11million on Jurgen Klopp’s coffee table – certainly paints the picture of a side going haywire.

The sun going so far as to suggest that Wales international Williams – given the unenviable task of taking on the outstanding Djed Spence at the City Ground – would rather join Forest than return to Fulham. The Cottagers will know when they’re beaten.

William’s attitude may come as a surprise given how well he’s adapted to life in the cottage over the last term. But perhaps his pro-Forest stance has something to do with the fact that the two-time European champions have a head coach in Steve Cooper whose track record of helping young players reach their potential will one day rival Jurgen’s Klopp himself.

What aspiring 21-year-old with a longing for first-team football would not Do you want to play under Cooper? At least not Neco Williams.
