Fury as a transgender cartoonist who claims to have a diaper art fetish will speak to children

A transgender cartoonist who makes fetish art out of furry creatures wearing diapers has sparked controversy after being booked by a library to speak in front of children.

Canadian artist Sophie Labelle will speak at Sheffield Central Library on Monday.

The comic artist will speak about the book The Best of Assigned Male, art and activism, and trans experiences.

However, concerns have been raised about the speaker’s suitability for children as young as 13 to participate.

The February 27 event is advertised as “suitable for adults, youth and families.”

Sophie has previously spoken about a fondness for “diaper fur art” but insisted “I have a kink that I indulge in responsibly and I refuse to be shamed for it”.

Conservative MP Miriam Cates has written to Sheffield Council – which runs the library – urging them to reconsider the event.

She said: “Even the most cursory background checks on Sophie Labelle have thrown up serious security red flags.

“This author’s work or ‘activism’ is in no way to be considered appropriate for children.

“There is a broad consensus among child protection experts and in society that exposing children to sexualised material is wrong and deeply harmful.

“I urge you to urgently investigate this matter and take action to protect children and prevent Sheffield from being brought into disrepute.”

Sophie told the Telegraph: “My work aims to empower trans youth and exemplify trans joy.

“I have given hundreds of lectures and public events in youth groups, libraries, schools without incident.”

Richard Williams, a Council Member, said: “Sheffield is a diverse and inclusive city.

“The event is aimed at teenagers and up, but we know that some families are attending Sophie’s talks and didn’t want to exclude them.”
