Gannibal renewed for second season on Disney+ – The Hollywood Reporter

Fans of Disney+’s first Japanese horror-thriller series have even more to offer: Gannibal. The House of Mouse announced Thursday that the hit Japanese original has been renewed for a second season, releasing a teaser trailer that offers a glimpse of what’s to come (see below).

The first season of Gannibal was a pillar title for Disney+’s push into Japanese live-action series production. Upon its release in December 2022, it became the streaming service’s most-watched locally produced original series in Japan of all time. GannibalYuya Yagira, the film’s lead actor, also received a nomination for Best Actor at the upcoming Busan International Film Festival’s Asia Contents Awards and Global OTT Awards.

Starring some of the biggest names in the Japanese screen industry, GannibalIn the second season, Yagira will return as police officer Daigo Agawa; Featuring Kasamatsu as Keisuke Goto, the head of the Goto family; and Riho Yoshioka as Yuki Agawa, Daigo’s strong and supportive wife.

The first season takes place in a fictional Japanese village Gannibal followed recently transferred police officer Daigo as he arrived at his new job and home a broken man. Struggling with his guilt over an event that traumatized his daughter, things start promisingly for the new village cop before a series of alarming events quickly lead Daigo to the terrible realization that something is wrong with the villagers and the mysterious Goto family seem to rule the city. Set in a hostile environment with tension at every corner, the first season took audiences on an emotional roller coaster ride before leaving them in a breathtaking cliffhanger.


The second season will once again be directed by Shinzo Katayama, with each episode written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Takamasa Oe (Ryusuke Hamaguchi). Drive my car) and produced by Teruhisa Yamamoto (Drive my car‘s Oscar-nominated producer). The show is based on a popular Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masaaki Ninomiya.

According to Disney, in the second season, audiences will “uncover more of the village’s terrible secrets and find out whether Daigo has what it takes to escape the impossible and bring the nefarious Goto family to justice.”
